Background and Design

Background

When I became a new mom, the center of my world became my child. After getting his newborn photos taken by a family member, I decided I would learn to edit the photos myself so I could find my own style. This photograph is a picture I will use in my child's year one book I will get printed for him!

Design

Black and white photos are timeless and classy. As this will be printed in a book for our family to cherish forever, I wanted to have a handful of classic, black and white photos so the photos don't look outdated in five years.

Photoshop Skills Used

Original

Spot healing brush to remove baby acne, scratches, and dry skin.

Selection tool to select the subject and save the selection for later.

Content-aware scale to extend the blanket background on the left of the photo and create more depth. I used my saved subject selection to protect his dimensions when extending the photo.

Content-aware fill to extend the blanket background on the right of the photo. This side of the photo had less area to work with to extend. Content-aware fill allowed me to fill the background without extending the photo.

Adjustment Layers

  • Black and White - created the base for the black and white photo. I altered the reds and yellows to add contrast to the skin.

  • Levels - increased shadows around the body creating depth.

  • Brightness - brightened up the face and the surrounding area. Using a layer mask, I was able to create an elipse around the face to only brighten up this area. Following this, I used a gaussian blur filter to remove the harsh lines.

  • Exposure - brought in more light to the photograph, specifically wanting to single out the subject. To do this, I added a layer mask to the adjustment layer using my saved subject selection for the layer mask, I added a gaussian blur filter to remove the harsh lines around my subject.

Revision

Removed brightness and exposure layers from the original edit.

Turned up the reds and yellows to create a softer contrast.

Adjusted the levels to soften up the harsh blacks in the photo.
