Last Sunday, Queef Jerky was absolute madness at Soundwell with their experimental, hyper-pop set. Being their first country-wide tour, this was definitely one to get the crowd going. The sound of Queef is an overarching melody to bless your ears; I can guarantee any iPad baby in that audience was in full attentiveness without Subway Surfers on screen. They’re just that good.
The project began on YouTube by artists and friends Nick Green and Dev Lemons (Devon Schmalz). Starting out as a joke and side project of both musicians, Queef Jerky gained a large following after their radio hit “PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN” was released. In response to this, the band began creating music more seriously– as serious as a band called Queef Jerky can– and everything that’s been released since have, needless to say, been all bangers.
They definitely got the girl in the hook tonight. Queef Jerky lyrics make fun of online jokes and memes and also other artists’ music. It feeds a part of my brain that can’t be reached by anything else. Kind of like the baby sensory videos: I can’t get enough of it. Not only is their cleverness inside the music, but in between songs, the two would keep things interesting with a comedy show-like set. The stage presence they hold from start to finish was incredible and hard to beat, might I add.
The set tonight included songs from their newest album “absolute madness” like “WE ROBBED THE BANK,” “MICHAEL PAUL,” “DON’T TALK BACK TO LADIES,” and many others. They were so shy to share, but I can guarantee our barking and screaming took care of them. The queefs always show up.
I saw Dev Lemons perform last year and even then was blown away by the power Nick brings in his drum sets. Also being a leading vocalist in the band, Nick pounds away through each song keeping the beat up and the energy high…. Mouth hangs open, heart beats out of chest, eyes burst out of sockets, whistles blow…. AWOOOOGAH!! I’ve always had a thing for drummers, and the magic Nick possesses is exactly why.
Going back to the beginning, the opener was an interestingly pleasant surprise. Orange Soda, a freestyle crew of three brothers, was definitely something new that was an unknowing need. They opened with such a wacky and fun set that set the tone easily for the next act of Queef Jerky to play out flawlessly.
One of my favorite bits from their set was their hamster role play and the differing dynamics of being extremely genuine and just outright silly. It was a great break away from real life where I could be silly with my fellow queefers.
As soon as their set opened I knew this was going to be the highlight of my summer. I was absolutely taken back by the utter release the audience had in the moment. Everyone was queefing, and we were queefing hard; It was hard not to let go and yell and scream along with the band.
A highlight of the night was when we were nearing the end of the show and they whipped out a recording of a dubbed Imagine Dragons cover. They explained that they create a song- without hearing what it sounds like- unique to each city they play. I don’t know about you, but this was peak Utah comedy.
While looking out in the audience there was so much interaction between the band and us. Between gifts the audience made for the band, Devon spinning an audience member’s hat, free stained jackets, and the back and forth of insults between both parties this was a concert unlike any other. My condolences to all those who missed it…you’ll get them next time.
