Rationale
In response to the need for an evidence-based action plan to implement synodality, the CBCP Research Office and the UST Research Center for Theology Religious Studies and Ethics have collaborated in 2023 to conduct a nation-wide study on "The Lights and Shadows in the present state of Catholic Christianity in the Philippines toward becoming a Synodal Church."
By identifying the Lumina (the graces and strengths) and the Umbrae (the systemic and spiritual challenges), The study sought to discern the "pathways" toward a Synodal Church, one defined by communion, participation, and mission in 6 areas, namely Diocesan Ministries, Clergy, Consecrated Life, laity, lay organizations, and non-Catholics. The study was conducted in all 86 dioceses. The 87th Diocese of Prosperidad was not included because it was established only 2024, when the project was already midway.
The national result was presented during the CBCP National Synod Assembly in Tagbilaran, Bohol in June 30-July 3, 2025. The data was part of the situation considered in the framing of the Sulong-Padayon National Synodal Framework that will guide the dioceses in implementing synodality. The study was also presented in a research assembly to all the 16 metropolitan regions for validation, reflection and discernment in terms of its significance and implications in their on-going implementation of synodality.
In this conference, the research team presents the analyzed and validated findings of the study to generate deeper reflection and wider discernment from the academe, researchers, pastoral workers, clergy, and religious, and the laity. It aims to provide a venue for sharing, discussion, and dialogue to further deepen the implications and significance of the findings in the desire of Catholic Church in the Philippines to be at the service of the Filipino people in union with the Universal Church. The conference provides a platform for academic exchange and reflection on the significance, implications, and critical evaluation of the study's findings.
