Date: 15-18 July - 2025
Local: Institute of Advanced Studies - USP (University of São Paulo)
Organizers: Prof. Bill Poirier - University of Vermont - USA (Chair)
Prof. Brett V. Carlson - Instituto Tecnológico da Aeronautica - São Paulo - Brazil
Prof. Valdir Guimaraes - Instituto de Física da Universidade de São Paulo - Brazil
The meeting seeks to honor David Bohm, and his seminal papers on quantum trajectories, which were published during his time at USP in the 1950's. More broadly, it will also be a celebration of the centennial anniversary of the Schroedinger equation. As such, participants will include researchers dedicated to Bohmian mechanics, but also others who have made broader contributions to foundational quantum mechanics. The proposed workshop therefore seeks to bring together researchers from a diverse community, e.g., atomic and molecular physics, chemical dynamics, extremely high-resolution spectroscopy, mathematics, nuclear physics, scientific philosophy, quantum foundations, and relativistic quantum mechanics—to share ideas and expertise. Through this workshop we will examine recent (and perhaps not-so-recent) progress in the various trajectory-based theories, to identify challenges and opportunities going forward, and to foster exciting new interdisciplinary collaborations. The workshop might also be an opportunity for reflection on how quantum mechanics has changed and reformatted Physics and the culture of Physics as one of the most relevant scientific theories ever devised.
This event is intended only for professors, researchers and postgraduate students.
A glimpse of David Bohm's ideas, and his connection with Brazil, may be found in this interview with Olival Freire Jr, for BBC News Brazil (click here for Portuguese or here for English)
