Jordon Urban Wins Geography Bee
Sylvan Lucas Unified participated in the first round of the 29thannual National Geographic Bee on January 13th. Ten finalists from 4th through 8th grades participated. Jordon Urban finished in first place and, as school champion, will take a qualifying test to determine if he is in the top 100 scorers in Kansas to continue competition at the state level Bee on March 31 in Abilene.
Two students in each grade from fourth through eighth earned the right to compete for the school title by ranking at the top of their classroom competitions. The ten finalists in the school Bee answered questions in both oral and written format that tested map skills and both US and world geographic knowledge. Competing in the championship round were Jordon and classmate Ben Wehrman. Other top ten finalists included the following: fourth graders, Harlan Pancost and Maggie Labertew; fifth graders, Jacob Schultz and Brooklyn Gosvener; sixth graders, Goldie Dohe and Taylor Fallis; and seventh graders, Jaina White and Dillyn Brummer.
Should Jordon go on to win the Kansas State Geography Bee, National Geographic will provide an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the national championship rounds May 15-17. The first-place national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic.
Zach Rose Wins Essay Contest
Sylvan-Lucas Unified Junior High 7th grader, Zach Rose, has been selected as the North Central regional winner of the “If I Were Mayor” essay contest.
Over 1,000 7th grade students submitted essay’s for the League of Kansas Municipalities “If I Were Mayor” essay contest, from 69 schools across 53 cities throughout Kansas. Six regional winners around the state have been selected with one selected to represent the entire state. The winners, along with their teachers, will be recognized at a special ceremony Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 2:15 pm in Topeka. Zach will receive a cash award of $125, a plaque, and is invited to have lunch with the Kansas Mayors Association.
Music Students Selected for KMEA's Conventions
The Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School and Elementary School will be represented by many fine young musicians at the Kansas Music Educator's Association conventions, coming up in December.
Performing in the KMEA Northwest District Elementary Honor Choir, from Lucas-Sylvan Elementary School, are sixth grade students: Geriun Boor, Taylor Fallis, Clara Griffiths, Goldie Dohe, Valdon Dohl, Kaley Johnson, Sophie Pancost and alternate Scott Jorgensen. The Elementary Honor Choir will be held at Beach/Schmidt Auditorium, on the campus of Fort Hays State University at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, December 10, 2016. The admission price is $5.00. For those parents who also want to attend the high school concert, a special stamp will be given so that admission is charged only once for both concerts.
The Northwest District KMEA High School Honor Band and Honor Choir will perform at a 3:00 p.m. concert, also at Beach/Schmidt Auditorium on Saturday, December 10. Those high school choir members, representing Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School are December Gier, Broderick Schofield, Yasmin Ettienne and Kelsey Decker. Dharma Couse will perform her bass clarinet in the High School KMEA Honor Band. All high school students had to audition for the honor of being a part of these fine performance groups. The combined honor choir and honor band will perform "Over the Rainbow," at the end of the concert. This arrangement was commissioned to be written for the Northwest District's Honor groups.
On Saturday, December 3, 2016, J.C. Huehl will play his violin in the KMEA Honor Orchestra concert, held at Dodge City High School. J.C., also had to audition to take part in the KMEA Orchestra.

Mustangs Earn NPL All-League Volleyball Honors
Four Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School volleyball athletes were recognized for their outstanding season by being selected to the Northern Plains All-League team. Junior, Logan Batchman and sophomore, Delaney Herold were selected to the first team. Seniors, Greta Wehrman and Cursstyn Jorgensen were selected to the third team. All four players helped lead the lady Mustangs to a 31-7 record on the season.
High School Students Participate in Math Relays
Sylvan-Lucas Unified High SchoolMath teacher, Mr. Spears, took 12 high school students to the Math relays hosted on FHSU campus. USD 299 finished 5th in the class 1A division (out of 18 schools). Students participating included Cursstyn Jorgensen, Greta Wehrman, Baili Kerth, Josh Weilert, Kerstin Decker, Morgan Kubick, Jedd Rowden, RJ Haberer, JC Huehl, Taegen Walter, Aundrea Haberer, and Autumn Princ.

Cross Country Qualifies Two for State Meet
The Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School Cross Country team Qualified two athletes for the Class 1A state meet being held on Saturday, October 29th, in Wamego. In the girls division freshman, Autumn Princ, won the regional meet and qualifying her for the state meet. Autumn won with a time of 19:02:10, over two minutes faster than the second place finisher. Autumn will run at 11:45 am on Saturday, October 29th, in Wamego.
In the boys division sophomore, JC Huehl, finished twelfth overall with a time of 18:47.57. The twelfth place finish qualified JC for the state meet. This will be the first state meet JC has qualified for after running cross country as a freshmen. JC will run at 10 am in the morning on Saturday, October 29th, in Wamego.
