Watch as Friends University art and ballet student, Julianna Mattson, paints an impressionistic acrylic masterpiece of the inspiring dancer, Misty Copeland.
A native of Kansas City, MO, Misty Copeland made history as the first African American Female Principal Dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre.
When she discovered ballet, however, Misty was living in a shabby motel room, struggling with her five siblings for a place to sleep on the floor. A true prodigy, she was dancing en pointe within three months of taking her first dance class and performing professionally in just over a year: a feat unheard of for any classical dancer. When Kansas Territory was organized, women's issues, and suffrage in particular, were of immediate concern. National leaders saw the newly organized western territories and states as ideal battlegrounds for women's rights in America. Kansas women saw some early victories; they gained the right to vote in school district elections in 1861 and municipal elections in 1887. The crusade for equal voting rights, however, continued to elude supporters. In 1912, eight years before the ratification of the national woman suffrage amendment, Kansas became the eighth state to extend equal voting rights to women.

Carry Nation - A Radical Force to be Reckoned With

Carrie Amelia Nation was perhaps the most famous person to emerge from the temperance movement—the battles against alcohol in pre-Prohibition America—due to her habit of attacking saloons with a hatchet. She has been the topic of numerous books, articles and even an opera, titled Carry Nation, which premiered in 1966 at the University of Kansas.
Join us for a visit to the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum to experience the life and times of one of the Nation’s most infamous prohibitionists, Carry A. Nation, and her crusade across Kansas.

Sandra Nickel - The Stuff Between the Stars: How Vera Rubin Discovered Most of the Universe

This session is provided by our friends at Watermark Books and Café and will run from 9:30a-10:15am.
About the book: Vera Rubin was one of the astronomers who discovered and named dark matter, the thing that keeps the universe hanging together. Throughout her career she was never taken seriously as a scientist because she was one of the only female astronomers at that time, but she didn’t let that stop her. She made groundbreaking and incredibly significant discoveries that scientists have only recently been able to appreciate.
A stunning portrait of a trailblazer, The Stuff Between the Stars tells Vera’s incredible story, celebrates her brilliance, and shows how a girl’s never-ending love for the night sky forever changed the way we see our universe.
About the author: Sandra Nickel’s first book, Nacho’s Nachos: The Story Behind the World’s Favorite Snack (Lee & Low, August 2020), was a Golden Kite Award finalist. She says that story ideas are everywhere; you just have to reach out and grab them. Sandra holds an MFA in writing for children and young adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She is a two-time winner of the Hunger Mountain Katherine Paterson Prize for YA and Children’s Writing. Although she grew up in Iowa and Kansas, Sandra now lives in Chexbres, Switzerland, where she blogs about children’s book writers and illustrators at whatwason.com. This is the story of how one woman impacted the Wichita community and beyond. Join this session to hear a first-person account from 95-years-old Dilce Polite aka Mother Polite. She has served in prison and jail ministry in Wichita and the state of Kansas for 50 years ministering to thousands of current and former male & female inmates. There are many shining examples throughout Wichita and the nation of people whom she has helped to get their lives back on track after incarceration.

Using hands-on creative writing methods., discuss the basic parameters of a story and then jump into writing using paper-cutting, drawing, sign language, or tangrams. Baseball is for everyone! Rich with the history of women who broke barriers to play the National Pastime, this session highlights the 150 years of striving for equity and diversity on the diamond. Meet the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League of the World War II era, as well as the young ladies of the 19th century who played the game long before they even had the right to vote. What do skirts and strawberries, charm school, and chaperones have to do with baseball? Each teaches an important lesson in the story of gals who gave their all so that boys and girls can play side-by-side today.

Kanika Gakhar: Propulsion Engineer at SpaceX
Kanika Gahkar is “a physicist in an engineer’s body who performs in a creative and entrepreneurial manner in challenging environments.” She graduated from Texas A&M University and MIT, was awarded the Aviation Week’s “20 Twenties” award, and is now a Propulsion Engineer at SpaceX.Kimberly Flock: Ph.D. Student and Graduate Research Assistant University of Iowa
Kimberly is a neuroscientist and a science communicator who spends her day working with brains and using social media to create a positive culture in science for all people. She received her bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and psychology at The University of Texas Dallas, her Master’s in pathology at the University of Iowa, and is now Ph.D. student in experimental pathology at the University of Iowa.Natalie Coleman: Ph.D. Student and Graduate Research Assistant Texas A&M University
Natalie Coleman is a civil engineer who is driven by her personal experiences with hurricanes and natural disasters, and focuses her work on societal impacts of infrastructure service disruptions. She was awarded the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship in 2020, received her bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University, and is now continuing on to her Ph.D. in civil engineering.

Let's Soar with Aviator Louise Thaden: a 1st Person Performance
Grades 3-12
In this session we'll experience a 1st person reenactor tell the story of Louise Thaden, the only woman aviator who held the three major competitive awards in aviation at the same time. A contemporary of Amelia Earhart, Louise was a key influencer for Wichita aviation success through Beechcraft.
Quick Facts About Louise Thaden:
In 1928, she set a women’s altitude record of 20,260 feet.
She set a new women’s endurance record of 22 hours, 3 minutes and 12 seconds in 1929.
Thaden became the fourth woman transport pilot, the first woman to win a national air race, and set a new endurance record of 196 hours.
In 1929, Thaden, Amelia Earhart and Ruth Nichols co-founded the Ninety-Nines for woman pilots. Thaden was Vice President from 1931-36 and treasurer 1930-34.
In 1936, Thaden with Blanch Noyes as co-pilot in a Beech Staggerwing C17R, won the Bendix trophy. The first woman to do so and received the Harmon Trophy.
During World War II she was active with the Civil Air Patrol and served with Ruth Nichols in Relief Wings.
