Welcome to Our 2022 Safari EdVenture Day

Thursday, October 6, we invite all classrooms far and wide to join us in an exploration of habitats, ecosystems, animal behavior, conservation, and animal science careers with both live sessions and on demand learning opportunities.

NOTE - If you are unable to join us live, all sessions will be recorded and available for on demand viewing within one hour. Links will be posted here on the site.

Peck out some time to learn about our feathered friends. Bird beaks come in many shapes and sizes, each with their own unique functions.

TEACHERS - Want to follow along? You will need the following materials:

Beak materials:

  • Clothespin

  • Spoons

  • Paper cup

  • Large spoons

  • Plate

  • Tape

  • Scissors

  • Cardboard

Things to pick up with the beak:

  • Flat surface (plate, tray, desk)

  • Bowl for food collection*

  • Rice or pasta*

  • Cut up straws*

  • Marshmallows*

  • Yarn*

  • Cereal*

*The food items can vary based on what you have available as long as they are all able to be picked up with the tools.

STORY TIME with the Great Plains Nature Center: The Autumn Calf

GRADES 3-6

Most bison calves are born in mid-spring. However, one August morning at the Konza Prairie Biological Station near Manhattan, Kansas, a new little orange-coated bison is discovered within the herd. The people who manage the herd become concerned about her welfare, as they know that since she is so little she faces many challenges to survive the winter in the tall-grass prairie of the Flint Hills.

Penguin's Family: The Story of a Humboldt Penguin: As penguin grows older, his mother and father take care of him. They protect him from hungry sea birds and provide him with food. Now they must teach him how to swim. In this session we will explore some of the awesome animal facts about Humboldt Penguins.

The 3 R's of Recycling

“The three R's – reduce, reuse and recycle – all help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. They conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy. Plus, the three R's save land and money that communities must use to dispose of waste in landfills.

In this session, join us as we talk about the 3 R's and how Wichita's own Pro Kansas Miller Recycling Center recycles items every day.

Honeycomb Structures

GRADES 3-12

Bees use honeycomb for their hives, but did you know honeycomb structure is used for airplanes? Honeycomb has unique structural properties – it can withstand compression but is very lightweight. We will demonstrate how to make and test a structure with a fun experiment.

Story Time with the Famous Aldabra Tortoise, Rocket

GRADES PK-2

Get to know the giant Aldabra tortoises at the Sedgwick County Zoo. These fascinating creatures are one of the world's largest land tortoises which can reach sizes of up to 550 pounds and ages of up to 150 years old. They are native to Aldabra Island, one of the Seychelles northeast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.

TEACHERS - If possible, please play the the story of The Tortoise and the Hare (located on the left) before joining the live call. In this session, we will compare the story's tortoise to the characteristics of the Giant Aldabra tortoise.

Let's Tour the Wichita Police Department's Horse Stables

Join Officers from the Wichita Police Department for a tour of the stables where their seven police horses live. We will learn about what the horse's jobs are, how they are cared for, and so much more!

3D Printing in the Animal World

GRADES 3-12

In this session, we will explore 3D printing prosthetics and assistive devices for animals as well as how engineering students at Wichita State University are working with the zoo and community members. We will be exploring all types of printing processes such as materials, and types of 3D printers.

TEACHERS - Excited for your students to explore their own engineering? TinkerCAD is a great place to start.

  • Teachers should set up classes for students.

  • Students should join using the teacher code.

  • Student work is private to their Tinkercad Class by default

  • Teachers should protect students' identity if the need arises for items to be shared outside the class.
