I go by my last name Su, but Yingyu (/ɪŋ21y35/ in Mandarin or /wɪŋ22y21/ in Cantonese) or Sue are also fine! My pronouns are she/her.
I am a third-year PhD student (as of Fall 2025) in the linguistics department at University of Southern California (USC) advised by Deniz Rudin.
I am broadly interested in syntax and semantics, and pragmatics. Specifically, I investigate how people communicate meanings that go beyond literal speech, with a focus on rhetorical utterances and the broader role of tone in tonal languages beyond word-level distinctions (e.g., word formation, speaker-stance marking).
I am currently coordinating S-Side Story and the departmental colloquiums at USC Linguistics.
