WWCRI is a virtual conference consisting of presentations and hands-on activities with the objective of empowering female Hispanic students in Computing towards research and industry. It combines the goals sought by two projects:
Google's ExploreCSR: which supports students from underrepresented groups to pursue graduate studies and research careers in computing
Caribbean Celebration of Women in Computing: this constitutes the Fourth (4th) Caribbean Celebration of Women in Computing (CCWiC), which focuses on building support networks and initiatives, all centered in empowering participants for professional growth and career preparation.
Undergraduate research experiences are a high impact educational practice that benefits students in a wide range of aspects: increased retention, improved communication skills, development of ability to work independently, and increased confidence, among others. For female undergraduate students in computing those benefits are strong since they can envision themselves in roles as researchers and can get encouragement from peers and envision other women as role models.
One of the goals in WWCRI is to prepare women studying undergraduate degrees in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Software Engineering in Puerto Rico to apply for Research Experience for Undergraduates summer opportunities. Students will learn about undergraduate research and its benefits, will listen to faculty and graduate students about their path into becoming researchers and how to get into graduate school, and promote the participation of women in these opportunities. Participants will also network with peers and faculty and learn about the life of graduate students in computing.
CCWiC promotes diversity with efforts that address the decline of women who choose computing related professions. It also offers opportunities for mentoring, networking, and technical/career development to women in computing. We encourage women to participate and promote diversity in computing related fields. All are welcome.
CCWiC is part of the ACM Celebrations of Women in Computing of the Association for Computing Machinery Council on Women in Computing (ACM-W). CCWIC is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience and implements the ACM antidiscrimination statement.
