Grounded in key principles and approaches in foreign language education, with a particular focus on Intercultural Language Teaching and Learning (ITIL), JLT 102 course provides a structured and engaging learning experience that moves beyond traditional methods. Participants are tasked with the development of practical tools for understanding and navigating Filipino–Japanese cultural dynamics, including differences in values, communication styles, politeness systems, and non-verbal behavior.

Through active, dialogue-based learning, guided reflection, and collaborative exploration—including the use of immersive platforms such as the metaverse—participants of JLT 102 will learn to create inclusive, culturally responsive classrooms that support meaningful and respectful intercultural communication.

This course also advances key Sustainable Development Goals by promoting inclusive and culturally aware education (SDG 4), reducing inequalities through equitable intercultural learning opportunities (SDG 10), and supporting peace and strong institutions by strengthening mediation skills, mutual understanding, and constructive engagement across cultures (SDG 16).

 Course Outcomes

At the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

                         1.          Analyze various approaches to Japanese language instruction.

                         2.          Articulate key concepts, definitions, and prominent frameworks of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC).

                         3.          Apply diverse and practical strategies for developing ICC to address intercultural dilemmas and enhance learner engagement in Japanese language teaching

                         4.          Implement effective and inclusive intercultural learning sessions based on clear objectives and selected dialogic techniques in Japanese language teaching

                         5.          Reflect on their Japanese language teaching practices and collaborate meaningfully with peers.
