Instructional design (ID) offers a practical and research-based framework for developing educational materials and activities that enhance learner engagement and outcomes. However, many Japanese language teachers in the Philippines have limited exposure to formal ID training. This course addresses that gap by introducing fundamental principles and models of instructional design tailored to Japanese language teaching contexts.
Through this course, participants will gain practical skills in analyzing learner needs, setting learning objectives, selecting appropriate content and methods, and evaluating the effectiveness of instruction. The course goal is to empower teachers to design more coherent, goal-oriented, and motivating learning experiences for their students, thereby contributing to the overall quality and sustainability of Japanese language education in the Philippines.
In addition, this course aligns with priority teacher-development directions in the Philippines and the Japan Foundation. National initiatives such as DepEd’s SPFL and CHED’s foreign-language strengthening efforts highlight the need for teachers skilled in designing pedagogically sound and context-appropriate lessons. Likewise, the Japan Foundation emphasizes abilities to accurately grasp learners' needs and learning situations, create appropriate teaching plans, and implement them as core competencies. By fostering these abilities, the course directly supports national objectives and the Japan Foundation’s mission to enhance Japanese language education in the Philippines.
Course Outcomes
At the end of the course, the participant should be able to:
a. Explain key concepts and models of instructional design and their relevance to Japanese language education.
b. Analyze learners’ needs and contextual factors to inform instructional planning.
c. Formulate clear and measurable learning objectives (Can-do) aligned with learner goals and course outcomes.
d. Design a lesson including appropriate teaching methods, teaching materials and learning activities using ID frameworks such as backward design.
