The capstone requirement for the BES program is the accomplishment of EDS 199 Special Project. In this course, the students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired from the program to produce comprehensive outputs in the form of a research paper, an educational program, or the production, design, and utilization of instructional technology and materials for the potential use and benefit of a chosen learning community. Aside from gaining first-hand experience in actual education work, skills on research writing, educational program or materials development, instructional design, and data gathering and analysis will also be demonstrated through your special project. In view of the program’s terminal output, you are advised to think about and plan for your special project as you take the courses in the program.
You may choose the area of education (e.g. Community Education, Indigenous Education, Distance Education, Islamic Education, Vocational Education, Health Education, etc.) that you wish to focus on in your special project from the area of concentration of the courses in the program and start working on it early on as you take your courses in the program. For instance, if you are interested in doing a research on community education for your special project, you may start working on it when you take EDS 195 – Introduction to Education Research and EDS 196 - Educational Research Methods. On the other hand, if you wish to work on developing an education program for the community, you may start establishing connections with people in the community you are interested in when you take EDS 134 – Community Education or do field works in your other major courses.
The course shall be taken by students with Senior Standing– a student who has completed the prescribed subjects of the first, second, and third years of his/her curriculum, or who has completed 75% of the total number of units required in the entire course, according to the Revised UP Code: Art.338 p. 85.
Note that the EDS 199 course offering is needs-based and should be taken consecutively during the student’s last two terms in the program.
