On July 1, UPC will take over the Overnight Center for a 3-month pilot program, using funds that the City voted to give us. We are hoping that by collaborating broadly with other agencies and congregations, we will be able to give people a safe place to sleep every night of the week. As I write this, we are finalizing a partnership with the Broome County Urban League, and they will handle staffing and payroll, leaving us to sort out the other things that go into the work.
We are also preparing for some administrative changes for our mission programs. At the congregational meeting on June 21, we will ask the congregation to establish a board of deacons. This board will not function like a “traditional” board of deacons — instead, it will provide oversight to all of our mission programs, including those housed in the building. If the way be clear, we will also elect deacons to the new board, as well as electing the new session class.
We’ll also be looking for a person with broad experience and great organizational skills to become the Facilities Supervisor, managing contracts, tracking room schedules, and keeping things moving smoothly. And finally, we hope to find and add to the staff a Mission Manager, who will work with the board of deacons to expand and enhance our mission relationships, including applying for grants and seeking funding opportunities to support our work.
If you have any questions or suggestions, we’d be glad to hear your thoughts.
Our annual Congregational and Corporate Meeting (Part 2) will be on Sunday, June 21, immediately following the worship service. We will gather on this Sunday to conduct the ongoing business of the church for this year, knowing that the Lord of love and light goes with us every step of the way! Watch this year as we ready ourselves for new things to come — electing new leadership and considering how to go where God is calling.
We will receive the team and project reports for the year, then constitute and elect a new Board to oversee our ministries of care for the community. And, as usual, we will elect the Session class of 2028 and the Nominating Committee for 2026–2027.
This meeting will be hybrid, immediately following the worship service, in the sanctuary and in the Zoom room. It would be good to have you with us, either in person or online.
We are a place where everyone is welcome as we support one another
to act justly, practice kindness, and walk humbly with God.
