The Philippine Genome Center Mindanao (PGC Mindanao) is an expansion of the Philippine Genome Center, a multidisciplinary institution based in UP Diliman, Quezon City. With the establishment of PGC Mindanao, omics research is now within closer reach to the Mindanao community and intends to be a catalyst for growth and development in the Island. Joel Hassan G. Tolentino, PhD
Dr. Tolentino was associated with PGC Mindanao as a project staff under the Research and Development Division. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Food Science and Chemistry (DFSC) at UP Mindanao. He obtained his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of Connecticut, USA, and his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) from UP Los Baños. His PhD dissertation was on mutagenesis studies of DNA lesions by site-specific approach. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Florida, USA where he had worked mainly on mechanisms of drug resistance in certain blood cancers. His current research is on drug discovery of potential anti-lung cancer substances from plants found in the Davao region.
As Director, Dr. Tolentino will provide leadership to PGC Mindanao’s initiatives to further research, training, and knowledge exchange activity across Mindanao. Dr. Tolentino’s research background and professional network will also be of help in continuing the ongoing developments in PGC Mindanao.
