MMS 173 Assignment 1b: Knowing Where I'm At (Part 2)
For a start, I want to be honest with you, before I enrolled with this course, I know nothing about photography, how to work with elements, principles and compositions. I am just a point and shoot type of person. I take my pictures because I wanted to keep the moment. That is why I find this assignment very challenging. Criticizing the works of your classmates, when you yourself have little to no idea about is like an ordeal of fire. Even after reading the module, I still need to do a lot of research to fully understand it (and I am still working on it).
After spending a lot of time browsing the pages with the submitted photographs by my fellow students. I believe I've opened almost all the submitted pages and there are some that I can't access. And I must say, most are already good in taking pictures, there are some who already have a background in photography and fine arts. So I believe they have used the ideas that they have learned to capture great moments/pictures. I have seen a lot of beautiful and very promising pictures, while some are just those typical photos that you can find on your storage devices, others are really exceptional. So, everytime I look at their photographs, I just cant help myself but feel envious.
While browsing, I was also choosing the best pictures that I can find and narrowing it down to eight. I chose the pictures that plays with my eyes and my mind. The colors that I find comforting and mesmerizing, moments that aren't just perfect but bedazzling.
The pictures below are my top eight, belonging to Abigail Jacinto, Angelica Craig ( which I believe is the most reviewed), Catherine Joy Cruz, Carm Lichelle Santos, Reggie Geografo, Patricia Autor, Mary Angelica Bonus, and Christian Aquilo. I chose a rather dark background to enhance the photos that I've chosen.
I like the how the color was played in this picture. The luminiscence of the wave is very fascinating. The angle was perfect that it gave texture to the waves. I love this photo so much as it is plays with one's senses. Where you would imagine yourself being there at that very moment.
This photo is a work of art. A fantastic piece that you can only get from high-paid photographers. And I believe that this photo is the most reviewed, well who wouldn't? It's simply breathtaking. The photographer displayed more emphasis on the subject "winter", so from the first time you lay your eyes on the picture it will draw you to the snow-capped mountains. However, at the same time, the photographer created contrast which created drama on the photograph. The subjects also overlaps each otherwhich made it more interesting, so from the snow-capped mountain and fog, it will slowly lead your eye to the sun then to the much nearer subject the balloons. Great way to play with the eyes of someone with astigmatism. Haha. Well all I can say is, this photo is so amazing that I want to put it in a frame and place is it our room.
This photo so far is one of my favorites. It reminds me how spirals are used as an optical illusion to hypnotize someone looking at it. I dont know what the artist want to convey, but it made me want to grab a cup of cafe latte. On the other hand, the photograph depicts rhythmic composition as the eye is directed to its focal point which are the imaginary circles that are repetitive pattern in form.
As I browsed through her submitted photographs, this one caught my eye. The first time I looked at this picture, I was so mesmerized that I just kept on staring at it. Looking at the color and texture, you can feel how powerful the fire is. Both of the subjects (fire and ashes of wood) are in perfect harmony that the picture looked so good and powerful which made it more captivating.
What I liked about this photo is that its too colorful that it somehow looked like jellyfish houses from a fantasy movie. The shapes and patterns are so unique. The vibrant colors against the dark sky and water, shows how high contast makes such a magnificent masterpiece. And I also like the mirror effect.
Oh, how I love the sunrise. It gives us new hope for each coming day. It's so fascinating to see how the silhoutte and the rays of the sun compliments each other. Just like the sunset, taking a photo of the sunrise is a good example of contrast composition.
What I liked about this picture is that it relaxes my eyes, the calm water, the cool tones with a little warm tone from the kayak didn't make this picture look boring. It's a good thing that a part of the kayak was taken with the picture or otherwise it wouldn't be this eye-catching. I like how the the photographer made me look at the first subject (kayak) and spread the view over to the mangroves upto the whole picture, this is an example of radial balance.
Lastly, this picture here radiates simplicity and beauty. As there is nothing much to see here, but you know that its a work of art. I like the way he experimented with the lines and patterns with this photograph, knowing that this is coming from a flat surface but with the right angle and by composing it diagonally, there we see a perfect picture.

Wow, I don't know where to start. First, I would like to let out a big 'Sigh'. Critisizing good pictures was a tough job.
Back to the topic, how would I rate myself? After seeing all the pictures my fellow students have submitted, I would honestly rate myself as a noob, 3 ot of 10 where 10 being the highest. As you know, I am just a typical point and shoot kind of person, and I would admittingly say that I know nothing about photography, and believe me I don't even know what I was saying above, so please forgive me. Even so, I would be very much willing to learn.
Trying to internalize everything and remembering the photos that I have seen, and it made me wonder why are they still taking this course? Where obviously they are 7 steps ahead of me. As I have mentioned above, some of our classmates are already exemptionally good at their craft, that you would even think of them as being a PRO. And yet, they are still eager to learn, perhaps they dont have that much knowledge yet, technically wise.
Although I liked how my pictures turned out, it is still not the best. Thank you to auto settings. I believe that i can do more and be more. So, as of the moment I may need to do a lot of readings and cross references to get better grasp and understanding regarding the basics of this course. And ofcourse, practice, practice, practice. As practice makes perfect, perhaps I will be able to produce captivating photographs in the future. We're barely halfway through so there is still room for improvement.
So, I am hoping that by the end of this trimester I will have the right amount of knowledge ragarding photography and its applications.
