MMS 173 Assignment 2: One Object

For this assignment, I chose an old flower clamp used for holding post-it notes and reminders. In an general attempt to juxtapose the bright colors of the object with plain, muted backgrounds, I opted to shoot it in a simple home office.

Fast Shutter Speed

For this photo, I decided to incorporate the texture of water into the image by adjusting shutter speed; due to my focus on capturing the texture though, I wasn't able to end up with a cohesive composition in the image's entirety.
It did end up looking steady despite some motion, but because I had a relatively fast shutter speed taken in poor lighting, it still became underexposed even if my aperture was set to the widest limit I could set together with the specific settings.
Selecting a high ISO helped a little bit in terms of brightening the photo, but I couldn't go higher due to the noise and grain introduction. My white balance was set at my default manual temperature of 5000K in order to balance out warm and cool tones, but due to the poor cool-toned lighting, it might have helped a little to use Daylight and generally warmer White Balance.

Slow Shutter Speed

I wanted to demonstrate a motion blur effect while drawing an emphasis to an attempted figure eight in the center. Since the object I had chosen couldn't move by its own, I had tried moving it first with my hand then eventually, with an attached string for relatively less distractions.
I set it at a relatively slower speed without going too slow in order to introduce less blur into the image. Due to the slow shutter speed, I had to select a narrower aperture and go back to the base ISO level in order to avoid overexposure.
As demonstrated, the slow shutter speed lets in more light into the image and incorporates blur on multiple motion frames as compared to the steady hand of a faster shutter speed. I had initially tried to crop out the faint remnant of the string pulling at the flower clamp, but I couldn't completely remove the string without making the flower look too cropped out - however, it still results in minor uneven distraction, despite the compromise in framing.

Wide Aperture

In demonstrating wide aperture, I attempted to draw emphasis on the flower clamp while still trying to incorporate unity within the photo by framing the image as a plain work desk, perked up by the sunflower visual.
Due to poor indoor lighting, my current aperture couldn't bring in as much light as I wanted, but since there was already a reasonable amount of brightness, I set the shutter speed at one second (not too fast to make the image darker, but also not too slow in order to get a clearer focus), while keeping the ISO at its base value.

Narrow Aperture

Similarly, I took this photo with the same attempt to use unity in the previous image. In contrast to the photo with wide aperture, this one (1) doesn't blur out the background as much and (2) it brings in less light, even with the shutter speed adjusted to a slow value in an attempt to balance things out.
I opted not to raise the ISO due to the fact that I wanted to lessen the grainy effect and stay close to the current black parts of the background; however, because of the lack of contrast between the dark colors and the bright ones, it ends up being dull and underexposed.

High ISO

For this photo, I wanted to incorporate the contrast between the yellow colors on the upper half and the blue light on the bottom half. I had intended to make the headphone wires look somewhat like roots, but the photo ended up underexposed.
In an attempt to take a handheld shot with less blur, I settled for a shutter speed faster than a second, which prevented me from getting further light into the photo. I tried but couldn't widen the aperture further due to camera limits as well.
I set the ISO at 5000 due to extremely dark lighting, and even though I couldn't achieve more brightness than I had initially planned, the lighting was already an improvement from when I started (my only lighting was a fluorescent lamp from behind where I was shooting).

Low ISO

Compared to the High ISO photo, this image is only slightly darker but with less grain and noise. Despite the dramatic drop in ISO with only a slight adjustment in shutter speed (slower) and aperture (slightly narrower), the image was able to match closer to the High ISO image due to the fact that it was exposed to an area with relatively more light.
Like most of the shots I've taken, I attempted to emphasize the flower tones in contrast with the dark shadows; due to a common issue of poor choice of lighting, low ISO, and only moderately fast shutter speed, the image ends up too dark to display its details.

Warm White Balance

I tried setting the ISO to a much higher setting this time around to better demonstrate the color tone contributed by the change in white balance, given that my lighting was less than ideal.
Fortunately, it was able to produce better visibility than most of the shots (except for the wide aperture shot) so far, despite further grain and noise.
I attempted to shot the white brick detail behind by lowering the aperture, but I couldn't get past my current setting without getting a darker, underexposed photo.
Due to this, I decided to draw simple emphasis and clear focus to the object and its warm tones instead.

Cool White Balance

Following the Rule of Space, I arranged the flower clamp to face the left side and allotted ample space accordingly. The cool white balance gave off a more muted, steady feel to the color tones. Much like the warm balance shot, I retained the ISO at a high value to avoid too much underexposure.
Despite the fact that I kept the shutter speed and ISO at the same settings and even widened the aperture, the white balance temperature gave emphasis on the dark parts of the photo which resulted in an darker image than the shot using warm white balance.

Portrait

I attempted to incorporate the simple use of shapes from the ladder's squares/windows. Initially, I tried to resolve the photo's underexposure by slowing down the shutter speed but I ended up with a slight shaky blur, which resulted in taking the shot with a faster shutter speed, but with a ISO higher than the base level of 100.

Landscape

I kept the image fairly simple for the landscape orientation and isolated the subject against a plain background in order to avoid distraction from the main colors of the flower clamp.
In order to avoid ending up with underexposed colors, I set the ISO to 1000, despite the introduction of noise and grain. I settled on a moderate shutter speed in order to avoid either making the image too dark or introducing slight handheld motion blur.

Dutch Angle

I made use of the Dutch Angle by framing the flower clamp in a way that made it look like it was sliding downwards.
In order to introduce contrast into the photo as well, I set the ISO relatively lower and introduced an additional source of narrow light to juxtapose it with the dark black triangle below.
I kept my shutter speed close to the previous values and kept the aperture on the wider end due to gain steadier and clearer focus on the subject, while maintaining a soft blur on the surrounding background.
