MMS 173 Assignment 1: Knowing Where I'm At (Part 1)
For as long as I could remember, I have never been the type of person who was good with photos. Whenever I would encounter any important life event or just any interesting occurrence in my day-to-day life, taking a photo to capture the moment wasn't exactly the first thing that came to mind. As a teenager, I was only ever confident with taking photos when I either had a high quality phone camera (which I couldn't afford until my 20s), or was using my parents' DSLR camera.
Despite my lack of photographer instincts, I wasn't a complete stranger to capturing both small and big moments.
These two photos capture two day-to-day instances that I like keeping in my phone. The photo on the left was taken last week at home, when my sister and I successfully attempted to make a do-it-yourself Bonchon Bibimbowl dish, which is now one of our regular meals. On the right is a picture of a cat I regularly run into near our house. She finally decided to stay put and pose for the camera last November.
On the left, I kept a memory of my sister and I watching a film from one of our favorite TV shows, Black Mirror, where we trying to navigate our way through Bandersnatch last December. On the right is a picture of my parents' DSLR camera, taken last week; we would bring this camera to all our family trips and as a kid, I remember feeding into the illusion that the high definition lens could solve my lack of photo skills back then (the illusion was fun while it lasted).
The next two photos were taken back when I was in elementary. The left captures a school field trip last 2008 that gave me the opportunity to watch musical theater live for the first time, which became one of the many sparks that ignited my passion for my current career path. The right features my family members in a Beach in Bicol, my mother's hometown, where we used to regularly visit - this one specifically taken in 2010.
I've taken a few scenic photos in the past as well, the left being another photo taken in 2010, of the beach we often went to in Bicol, which somehow gives me a sense of calmness and contentment, and the right being a photo taken during New Year's 2012, where my family would get together and exchange gifts (New Year's became our Christmas - but with more grandeur and fireworks).
The photo on the left also comes from one of our 2012 New Year celebration photos. It isn't a photo of the whole family, but it helps me remember how much fun these reunions can be. This isn't to say that smaller family outings are less fun - the photo on the right is a shot I took of my siblings goofing around on a trip we took to Tagaytay back in 2011.
Looking back at all the memories captured in these photos, I can say that although I'm a complete photography beginner, I guess even beginners can make the most out of the distinct nostalgia only photos can bring.
