MMS 173 Assignment 3: Bucket List

Before I took this course, I only ever relied on good lighting and pre-made settings. In accomplishing this activity, I learned to be more aware of what goes into actually capturing an image. Although the photos I've shot for this assignment are in no way perfect or exceptional, however, I can fortunately say that this 15-item bucket list has further elevated my perception of photography.

Note: Each set of EXIF details are from their respective original files in order to avoid any loss of info and data during post-processing and resizing. Uploaded images have been optimized/resized to 800px maximum on the longer edge; however, EXIF info will show original size instead of optimized size.

Contemplation

I shot this portrait in a dark area with the only light coming from my sister's laptop, so in order to avoid handheld blur from my phone camera, I settled for a moderate shutter speed and opted to adjust the ISO to a higher setting.
My phone camera didn't allow modification of aperture so I had to adjust the rest of my settings on the fixed value of f/2.2 whenever I was working with my phone. In order to make the color tones interesting, I set my white balance to a warmer temperature.
For this theme, I wanted to capture a candid but steady portrait. To demonstrate that, I shot a picture of my sister busy at work, facing a yellow-tinted screen as aided by the reflection of the screen light on her glasses.

Standing Oblation

Shot during noon, I wanted to tame down the light without making the photo too dark so I set my shutter speed to a moderately fast time, and selected a relatively narrower aperture.
What caught my eye in taking this photo, other than the stunning view of the oblation, was the general muted color tone that reminded me of a somewhat warm, nostalgic feel that is unique to UP.

Clouds Over Orange

I wanted to showcase the dark tones of the clouds along with a more visible orange shade coming from the sunset, so I set my shutter speed to a fast value, while slightly adjusting the ISO to incorporate a little bit more light.
Despite the fact that the sunset isn't peeking through that much, it still shows off its light burning color in contrast with the dark elements surrounding it - similar to a fire trying to release its last spark before the night puts it to rest.

In this photo, I wanted to capture two main things. Firstly, there is the way the sharp top points of the tower seen to pierce through the clouds and show a brighter sky. Aside from that, the subtle mix of a warm color (pink) with the general cool-themed tones makes for a nice, soft variation. The title is also brought about by the juxtaposition of the dark grounded lamp post and the bright higher tower.
My shutter speed was set at a moderately fast pace to avoid motion blue and I adjusted my white balance to lean to a slightly cooler tone in order to match the general color theme. I tried lowering the ISO past the usual base as well to help aid with avoiding noise and grain.

In displaying the pattern of reversed arches, I wanted to break the pattern and draw emphasis to the rusting spot of the arch in focus without blurring out the rest too much, enough to maintain the pattern.
My aperture was set slightly narrower than my widest value limit to accommodate good focus while still capturing the bigger picture. The shutter speed was set faster than a second to incorporate slightly darker-toned visuals into the bright color yellow.

Splatter

I wanted to capture both the motion blur of the arched fountains and the detailed splatter of the vertical fountains. In order to achieve this, I set my shutter speed to a midpoint value (not too fast but not too slow), until I captured the right detail.
Since this was shot at night as well, I raised my ISO levels in order to better showcase the fountain color lighting, resulting in what looks like paint splatter.

Flower

Reach and Bloom

For this shot, the flower is framed to look like it is reaching out to the sky. I wanted to create balance and contrast between the dark, green, textured area of the leaves and the bright white portion of the sky, in order to better emphasize the slanted transition of the main subject in the center.
To accomodate better close-up focus, I set my aperture to a wide value and adjusted my shutter speed to a moderate point providing darker tones on the leaves without leaving the image underexposed.

Red

Odd One In

In an attempt to break the pattern, I shot this photo to emphasize the single red cloth draped over one subject identical to the rest of its reference pattern. To make the shot more interesting, I incorporated the Dutch angle to make the contrasting figure appear as if it is leaning forwards more compared to the rest of its bare copies.
This was shot with bright natural lighting, so I sped up the shutter time in order to avoid too much overexposure. In order to keep the cloth's red color vivid, I retained the aperture at a wide value to balance out the shutter speed value and the base ISO.

Siesta

After noticing my camera nearby, this feline woke up from an afternoon nap to pose for a photo. I aimed to draw focus to the warm yellow tones on the cat's fur and eyes, complemented by the muted salmon-colored floor.
Following the rule of space, I included the length of the cat's legs to create more space in the direction it was facing. I set my shutter speed at a moderate pace to avoid blur due to movement, and kept my aperture at a wide value to draw clearer focus to the detail on the eyes, ear fur, and whiskers.

Using the base ISO value of 100 and a moderately fast shutter speed, I aimed to capture the dark silhouette visuals from the main trunk, while gradually reclaiming detail as the tree branches out.
I intended to create contrast between the bright lighting and the dark shadow of the tree, while keeping balance on the color weight on both sides.

This Way

I was attracted to the slightly muted vivid blue color of the street signs, complemented by the energy of the color tones from the sun and the leaves. In order to retain detail on the tree trunks as well, I kept the shutter speed at a relatively faster value to avoid too much overexposure from direct lighting.
Shooting it at a perspective looking up was able to help me draw attention to the energetic vibe of clear street signs giving directions on a sunny day.

Melting Point

For this photo, I wanted to capture similar warm muted tones and attempt to show the smooth melting texture of the ice cream, meshing in with the coarse detail of the sugary bread.
To maintain a subtle warm tone, I only slightly adjusted the white balance to a warmer temperature of 5400K from my default midpoint of 5000K and kept the shutter speed at a moderately fast pace to avoid any shaky blur from my hand.

I found this faded grafitti in the middle of an old rusty ventilation fan. Although the circles were not arranged in a spiral, it appeared to me like a rigid and rusty version of a hypnosis spiral controlled by the grafitti.
I kept my shutter speed at a moderate pace and set my aperture to a wide value to focus and contrast the bright central graffiti circle with the rest of the old metal material.

Tube Lines

For this photo, I wanted to focus on having the tube lines give the building wall an illusion of height by shooting diagonally to include the ending tip of the tubes gradually reaching more sunlight. The orientation also framed the photo with a white triangle on the upper right side, and a black one on the lower left side.
I kept my shutter speed at a generally moderate pace, slightly leaning on the faster end in order to balance out the bright lighting and retain the shadows on the bottom part.

Royalty

I aimed to draw emphasis to the red toy monkey seemingly wearing a gold cap by accompanying it with what looks like a wide vivid blue carpet (instead of a red carpet) with a linear design. I attempted to make it look like it was about to walk towards a royal ramp, hence the specific focus blur.
I adjusted the shutter speed enough to not introduce too much motion blur and balance out the poor indoor lighting, and slightly adjusted the ISO to lighten the image a bit.
