Drag-a-Zine: Debunking Myths Surrounding Drag
In recent years, Drag has been recognized as a widely popular form of entertainment for people, especially in the Philippines. Furthermore, its history as an artform is deeply rooted from protests against heteronormativity and the queer revolution. Unfortunately, there is a gap in people’s understanding of Drag’s history and significance in society. This project hopes to shift the perceptions of the general public, especially those who are already familiar with mainstream Drag as a form of entertainment, on what truly Drag is
Drag-a-Zine aims to highlight the experiences of the LGBTQIA community, especially with Drag as a platform. The Philippines as a more “tolerant” country towards people of diverse SOGIESC should be able to realize that queer people should not and cannot merely be reduced to a source of entertainment. Apart from entertainment, the art of Drag is rooted in the struggle of queer people.
This short zine features 4 original comics accompanied by brief descriptions discussing different aspects of Drag. It also includes a sticker pack that hopes to begin meaningful conversations about the true beauty of Drag.
