The tasks the interns may be assigned to will reflect their commitment for educational communication and its increasing relevance in today’s education and development landscape. Because educational communication encompasses multiple spheres of practice, we organized DEC’s internship program into three distinct tracks. Interns may indicate their preferred track as early as the application period. Final placements will be confirmed at the start of the internship. A broad list of possible tasks are listed below:
Track 1: Research and Scholarly Engagement Track
Research Assistance in Educational Communication Research Projects
Support ongoing DEC research projects through literature searches, transcription of interviews and focus group discussions, and proofreading;
Assist in data collection activities, including interviews and focus group discussions;
Contribute to documentation and report writing for research projects;
Design publicity materials (e.g. social media cards, short videos) to help popularize DEC research;
Potentially co-author academic papers with DEC faculty and research staff (depending on degree of contribution).
Track 2: Public Service and Community Engagement
Field-Based Assistance for Bright Beginnings: A Community-Based Collaborative ECCD Learning System for Parents and Caregivers of Children Below 5 in Los Baños
Coordinate with teachers and parents from the Rural Improvement Club (RIC) Los Baños in preparation for the implementation of the Bright Beginnings Learning System;
Participate in field visits and orientations with RIC teachers, who will serve as point persons for parents’ learning support;
Assist in the assembly and monitoring of printed modules and other offline learning support resources.
Document meetings, activities, and community engagements, and prepare corresponding reports;
Writing and Production Work for EdCom Talks Proceedings
Provide writing assistance for the EdCom Talks Proceedings, covering EdCom Talks 2025 on artificial intelligence and development communication education;
Design and layout the proceedings for publication;
Assist in pretesting draft materials with DEC faculty and staff.
Track 3: Digital Communication and Publications Track
Creative Storytelling for EdComics
Ideate and produce long-form educational comics in collaboration with the EdComics team;
Write reviews and commentary on comics that highlight development-oriented issues;
Develop video-based educational comic content on selected themes.
Digital Communication Strategy for DEC Facebook Page
Write news articles and briefs on recent activities of DEC faculty, REPS, and staff;
Design social media cards for announcements, updates, and accomplishments;
Maintain a monthly content calendar and support the unit’s digital communication strategy.
Qualifications/ Requirements
Must demonstrate proficiency in research, interviewing, and academic or technical writing;
Must possess working knowledge of visual design, layout, video editing, and/or basic web content management;
Must be willing to work in flexible arrangements, including office-based, remote, and field settings;
Must be able to provide sample outputs (e.g., research papers, articles, creative works, or media productions) from the past two (2) years;
Additional preferred qualifications (depending on track):
For Research and Scholarly Engagement Track
Experience in literature review, data gathering, transcription, or research documentation;
Familiarity with academic writing conventions (e.g., citation styles, report writing).
For Public Service and Community Engagement Track:
Experience in community engagement, facilitation, or training activities;
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
For Digital Communication and Publications Track:
Experience in content creation for digital platforms (e.g., social media, blogs, or multimedia);
Skills in graphic design, layout, or storytelling for public audiences.
