The Department of Economics is one of the Department in Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna, Which, offers Both Bachelor of Arts ( Hons) Degree program in Economics and Bachelor of Arts Degree program in Economics . Graduates from these programs, go on to pursue careers in various fields of government and private Sectors including teaching, business, Banking, Finance, international affairs, and government and public policy. Bachelor of Arts ( Hons) Degree program in Economics provides severe training in economic theory and methods, as well as their application to real-world policy issues. Especially, the students who completed our Bachelor of Arts ( Hons) Degree program in Economics are job makers instead of job seekers

Bachelor of Arts ( Hons) Degree program in Economics

This is a four-year degree program; this program is designed for the students who wish to specialize in economics as a Bachelor of Arts. the students who wish to pursue Bachelor of Arts ( Hons) Degree program in Economics should follow all course courses offered by the Department of Economics and students are encouraged to take elective courses from outside of the Economics Departments Even though, Departments of Economics offer a lot of elective courses.

Admission Requirements for Bachelor of Arts ( Hons) Degree Program in Economics

The students are admitted to the Honours Degree program in Economics at the beginning of Level II. After success full completion of Level – I, The Students who wish to follow an honour degree program in economics, can make an application to the Dean’s office of the faculty of Arts.

The admission to the above program will be given based on the preference of the students and merit order subjected to the following:

  1. Should have obtained a GPA of not less than 3.3 calculated for the course units in the subject of Specialisation ( Economics ) in Level – I and,

  2. Should have obtained a GPA of not less than 2.0 calculated for all the core course units of the other subjects in Level - I.

A maximum number of students for the Honours Degree program in Economics will be decided by the department of economics based on the availability of the physical and human resources of the Department of Economics.


Bachelor of Arts Degree Program in Economics

This is a Three - year degree program; this program is designed for the students who wish to follow a general degree program in Economics. The students who wish to pursue the Bachelor of Arts Degree program in Economics should follow at least one Core course unit per semester offered by the Department of Economics From Level - I to Level III. And General students, since a lot of elective courses are offered by the department of Economics, are encouraged to take elective courses from our department.
