He obtained his M.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Bologna in 1997 and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 2003 at the University of Urbino under the supervision of Prof. G. Tarzia. During his doctoral studies, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, working with Prof. Paul A. Bartlett. Following his Ph.D., he carried out postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, USA) with Prof. Mohammad Movassaghi, and subsequently at Nerviano Medical Sciences (Milan). These experiences contributed to the development of his independent scientific profile in catalytic and asymmetric organic synthesis, bridging fundamental research and applied chemical innovation. He began his academic career in 2006 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Urbino, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015, and has been Full Professor of Organic Chemistry since 2019. He has established and led an internationally recognized research program focused on catalytic organic synthesis and asymmetric catalysis, with particular emphasis on the development of innovative and conceptually new strategies for the synthesis of tryptophan-derived indole alkaloids. His research combines methodological innovation with complex molecule synthesis, addressing long-standing challenges in stereocontrol and reactivity, and aims at expanding the frontiers of modern organic catalysis.
Super Brief: Giovanni Piersanti received his Ph.D. in 2003 from the University of Urbino. After two and a half years of postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, USA) and at Nerviano Medical Sciences (Milan), he began his academic career in 2006 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Urbino. Since 2019, he has been Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the same university. His research interests focus on catalytic organic synthesis.
