Caudates
The axolotl is a relevantly young species. Having only been in Mexico for about 10,00 years. Following the ancestral trail through the genus, you will come to the mole salamander, then even further you come to some of the first forms of the salamander the Caudates, which does not have a family, but instead have a clade, known as the Caudata. Following the scales of macroevolution, you will see the homologous structure, in the form of a wide and slightly blocky head.
Karacurus
The karacurus was found in the late Jurassic period, and was a large salamander for that period, with a length of 20 centimeters. The wide head four appendages and tail are all similar to the modern salamander. The karacurus is the stem group salamander that forms the Caudates.
