The following concepts are mastered in First Grade:
I can show a steady beat at a variety of tempos.
I cans show the difference between forte and piano.
I know the basic note values of quarter notes, quarter rests and a pair of eighth notes using rhythm syllables.

Students in first grade will be exposed to the following musical vocabulary during their music classes this year:
composer, conductor, music staff, timbre, long and short sounds, call and response
First Grade Concepts and Skills taught throughout the year. These skills are introduced and not expected to be mastered in the kindergarten year unless noted:
• Identify a steady beat in music at various tempos (mastered)
Demonstrate a steady beat at various tempos.
Recognize loud and quiet dynamic levels. (mastered)
Demonstrate fast and slow tempos.
Demonstrate understanding of quarter notes, pairs of eighth notes and quarter rests. (mastered)
Perform on classroom instruments with appropriate technique.
Demonstrate understanding of AB and ABA songs. (same and different parts)
Demonstrate ability to match pitches.
Improvise melodic and rhythmic patterns
Develop singing voice through a varied song repertoire and pitch matching activities
