MYP Design
Perspective on Trip Week
Let your design thinking skills help you make sense of what you observed during Trip Week!
Sustainable Service Design
During Trip Week, you will be observing systems in a mountainous rural part of Vietnam. You will inquire into the livelihood ar the area: Agriculture. You will consider choices of crops and livestock (fish, ducks), irrigation systems, transport, energy, health services, entertainment, spirituality and education. You will wonder why things are the way they are. By wondering with an open mind you might find design opportunities or just be amazed at the ingenuity already in place.
As you look into different systems during the trip week, you will find you are more intrigued by some than others. This will help you find a system that you want to look into more thoroughly.
You will be challenged to conduct an evaluation of a social enterprise that our school already partners with. Your field journal will provide you with inspiration and the start of your research.
As designers, we are always on the lookout for problems. Our design thinking can help solve problems. But it is not always easy to really understand why things work the way they work. It therefore makes sense to look at existing solutions and how they approach a problem.
Product/System Study
As part of the interdisciplinary learning, you will be conducting what designers call a 'product/system study' in which you will analyse the objectives, organization and impact of an existing social enterprise active in areas similar to the one you have visited. You will go through the 'inquiring and analyzing' and the 'evaluating' stage of the design cycle only.
For your chosen social enterprise:
Ai - What problem does it solve?
Aii - What do you need to know in order to analyse further? What sources can you consult?
Aiii - What other organizations provide solutions to similar problems? What is similar, and what is different?
Aiv - What are the mission and vision of the organization? why? What service is provided exactly?
Di - How can we define what the success of the service provider looks like? (technical, marketing, business strategy)
Dii - By the standards defined in Di: Are they successful? What evidence do we have of this?
Diii - What can possibly be improved?
Div - How does a social enterprise ensure sustainable impact?
More information and specific instructions will be shared via Toddle.
Phoenix Nest
The MYP Design part of the interdisciplinary learning before, during and after Trip Week, will lead into the Phoenix Nest project that follows it. In this project, you will be challenged in teams to design your own sustainable and impactful social enterprise.
UNIS Service Learning
This learning experience will also give you the opportunity to explore the UNIS service learning partners in preparation for the High School Service Learning program.
