Any research project – whether conceptual, empirical or a combination of both – has steps and a basic structure in common. We work from outlining what we will do in the study, to reviewing the body of literature related to its topic and field, to unpacking the methodology we followed in answering (to) the research questions outlined, presenting and interpreting our findings, and finally concluding the study.
It all seems logical and almost easy when put this way. The truth of the matter, however, is that there are many aspects that feature into the above and many nuances that complicate and encumber it. Just think about the process of finding suitable sources and avoiding plagiarism while using them. Things can become more complicated than anticipated at the outset.
The Department of Communication Science at Unisa endeavours to help its students navigate all of this. This website is, however, open to any and all Masters and Doctoral students who could benefit from this content. As such, this website offers a lecture series on all the pertinent aspects of your study completion. These lectures are divided in two - based on where you are in your study. If you are still busy with your proposal, please click on the relevant tab below. Once you progress, or if you are now busy with your dissertation or thesis, you will be ready to engage with the lectures under the Dissertation/Thesis tab. It is up to you as to how you schedule watching these video lectures. You can engage with a specific aspect once you start working on it (for example wait to watch the video on Literature Reviews until you are busy with yours), or you can set aside two or three days to watch all of the videos, back-to-back to get an overview of the entire process.
At all times, remember to discuss what you have learned here with your supervisor(s). Remember each study is different.
We hope you find the lecture series helpful and we wish you all the best with your studies.
