Marta Bucciarelli was born in Rome in 1981. In December 2003 she graduated cum laude in Communication Engineering from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, with a Bachelor thesis on "Two different applications of the chirp signal: spectral analysis and time scaling ". In July 2006 she graduated cum laude in Communication Engineering with a Master thesis on "Wide-band nulling techniques using Tapped Delay Lines " from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, where she received the Ph.D. degree in Radar and Remote Sensing in April 2010, with a thesis on "Signal processing techniques for high-resolution multi-channel spaceborne and airborne radar systems". From 2009 she is charter member of the academic spin-off SYMPAS S.r.l. (SYstems for Monitoring, Positioning and Advanced Sensing). In 2010 she received a research contract on “Signal Elaboration techniques for mono or multistatic radars with long coherent integration time” by DIET Dept. which is part of the Faculty of Information Engineering, Statistics and Informatics. In 2014 she spent a working period at the NATO Science and Technology Organization - Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation as Visiting Scientist in the context of the Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA) project.

Since 2008 she attended as speaker to several conferences related to radars, presenting several of her research results; International Radar Symposium IRS-2008 held in Wroclaw (Polonia) 21- 23 May 2008, IEEE RadarCon 2008 held in Rome (Italy) 26- 30 May 2008, IEEE Radar 2008 held in Adelaide (Australia) 2 - 5 September 2008, EuRAD 2009 held in Rome (Italy) from September 30 to October 2 2009, IEEE Radar 2012, Glasgow (UK) 22 Oct - 25 Oct 2012, IEEE RadarCon 2013, Ottawa (Canada) 29 April - 3 May 2013, MTS/IEEE OCEANS 2015, Genova (Italia), IGARSS 2016, Milano (Italia) . Moreover from 2007 to 2010 she attended summer-shool, tutorials, courses and training software regarding radars.

Research Activity

The main research interests of Marta Bucciarelli are in adaptive SAR multi-channel signal processing for interference cancellation, high-resolution ISAR imaging and advanced passive space-based maritime MTI. She has been involved in the following projects with Italian industries, Italian Space Agency (ASI) and European Commission:

  • 2015-2017, has been involved in the H2020 research project SpyGLASS

  • 2014, has been involved as a visiting researcher in the STO NATO CMRE project Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA)

  • 2012-2014, has been involved in the research contract between DIET Dept. and INTECS S.p.a. 'Antenna acustica passiva basata su array di microfoni su membrana flessibile'

  • 2009-2011, has been involved in the research project funded by Selex Galileo 'Study on Distributed ISAR Techniques'. Scientific coordinator: Prof. D. Pastina, INFOCOM Dept (now DIET). Selex Galileo Supervisor: Ing. C. Spina.

  • 2009, has been involved in the project 'Studio e modellistica dell’impatto delle distorsioni di catene riceventi radar in termini di parametri di sistema' with Thales Alenia Space. Scientific coordinator: Prof. P. Lombardo, INFOCOM Dept (now DIET). Thales Alenia Space Supervisor: Ing. F. Marchetti.

  • 2007-2010, has been involved in the FIRB (Fondo di Investimento per la Ricerca di Base) research project funded by the Italian Ministry of Research on the 'Innovative Methodologies and Technologies for Airborne Radar with Scanning ELectronic antenna (IMT-ARSEL)'. Prime Investigator: Prof. P. Lombardo, INFOCOM Dept (now DIET).

  • 2007, has been involved in the research project funded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) on 'Feasibility study and development of enabling technologies for SAR ECCM'. Prime Investigator: Prof. P. Lombardo, INFOCOM Dept (now DIET). Italian Space Agency Supervisor: R. Battaglia.

  • 2006, has been involved in the 'CARMES' project with Thales Alenia Space. Scientific coordinator: Prof. P. Lombardo, INFOCOM Dept (now DIET).

Teaching activity

The teaching activities of Marta Bucciarelli concern telecommunication, radar and remote sensing topics. In particular she has been giving theoretical and training lessons inside the courses of “Controllo del traffico aereo”, “Laboratotio di Telerilevamento” and “Fondamenti di Telecomunicazioni e Telerilevamento”.
