Enrico De Santis earned his Master's degree (cum laude) and Ph.D. in Information and Communication Engineering from the “Sapienza” University of Rome, Italy. During his doctoral studies, he worked for five years as a research assistant and later as a postdoc at the Department of Computer Science at Metropolitan University in Toronto, Canada. He is currently a researcher and lecturer at the Department of Information, Electronics, and Telecommunications Engineering (DIET) at the “Sapienza” University of Rome, teaching courses in “Pattern Recognition” and “Computational Intelligence”.
His research interests, conducted within the CIPAR LABS at DIET, include artificial intelligence, complex systems and data-driven modeling, natural language processing (NLP), computational intelligence, neural networks, and fuzzy systems, with applications in various technical areas such as Large Language Models (LLM), Smart Grids, high power Li-ion battery modeling and predictive maintenance. In the field of natural language processing, his interests range from theoretical advances in language modeling and meaning representation concerning complex systems theory to technical applications in text mining. He is also interested in science's ontological and epistemological aspects and the connection between cognitive sciences and artificial intelligence.
In the context of complexity theory, he studies how language structure can be analyzed using fractal systems and how meaning is represented through long-term correlations, a distinctive feature of complex systems.
Enrico De Santis is the author of several publications in national and international venues and is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Since 2017, he has collaborated with the innovative startup SisterPomos at “Sapienza” University and, in 2024, co-founded the innovative startup TensorLoops, managing artificial intelligence projects in production environments.
In 2021, he published a book with ARACNE titled "Umanità, Complessità, Intelligenza Artificiale. Un connubio perfetto." The interdisciplinary essay weaves together various themes related to the relationship between intelligent systems, which form the foundation of artificial intelligence, and complex systems, adopting a human-centered and systemic perspective.
In September 2023, he published an article on large language models and their relationships with language theory for the quarterly magazine “Prometeo” by Mondadori, titled: "Apocalissi digitali e alchimie artificiali: il linguaggio nell'era della sua riproducibilità tecnica".
