About the event
The Department of Mathematics at Sapienza University of Rome is pleased to host a conference dedicated to the broad and rapidly evolving field of Data Science, with a special focus on its interplay with Mathematical Physics.
The conference will feature both applied and theoretical contributions, reflecting the multifaceted role of data science across diverse areas of modern physics. On the applied side, topics will include the use of statistical and computational methods broadly in Theoretical Physics, with selected topics from Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and Relativity Theory and more, with particular emphasis on how modern data-driven analyses are reshaping traditional modeling frameworks. On the theoretical side, the program will explore rigorous and conceptual aspects of high-dimensional statistics, probabilistic inference, and the mathematical theory of neural networks, including recent advances inspired by spin-glass models and random matrix theory.
By fostering exchanges between Mathematical Physicists, Theoretical Physicists and Data Scientists, the conference seeks to identify unifying principles and emerging methodologies that connect the structure of physical laws with modern techniques of data representation, learning, and prediction. The overarching goal is to build a common language between theory and data, bridging the gap between the analytical rigor of mathematical physics and the algorithmic power of contemporary data science.
Of special significance is the tribute to Francesco Guerra, former Director of this Department in the 1980s, who taught the course Statistical Mechanics for decades and served as Emeritus Professor of Mathematical Physics at Sapienza University of Rome. In honoring his legacy, the selection of speakers will emphasize excellence inspired by his School: ample space will be given to outstanding scholars who emerged from his teaching across generations, as well as to his colleagues and friends renowned for their remarkable contributions to modern science.
Accordinlgy, while the logos of the event will be shared between the two themes of Data Science and Mathematical Physics, the pathos will be entirely devoted to the memory of Francesco Guerra.
