Future in the past
spiegazione e note: quando il condizionale passato in italiano viene usato per il discorso indiretto, in inglese non si traduce con il condizionale passato, bensì o con il condizionale presente (would + infinito) o con ‘was/were going to’.
Per esempio:
i) Non sapevo se ti sarebbe piaciuto = I didn’t know if you’d like it/you were going to like it;
ii) Ha detto che l’avrebbe comprato lei = She said she’d buy it/she was going to buy it;
iii) Non ha detto Jim che sarebbe venuto? = Didn’t Jim say he’d come/he was going to come?
esempi (con traduzione):
a) Non mi ha detto nessuno che sarebbero venuti in macchina.
b) Le hanno chiesto quando si sarebbe trasferita a Londra.
c) Non avevamo idea che sarebbe piovuto oggi - le previsioni erano buone.
d) Come hai fatto a sapere che ci saremmo fermati a pranzare proprio in questo ristorante?
e) Ho comprato questo libro perché loro hanno detto che mi sarebbe piaciuto.
a) Nobody told me they’d come/they were going to come by car.
b) They asked her when she’d move/she was going to move to London.
c) We had no idea it would rain/it was going to rain today - the forecast was good.
d) How did you know we would stop/we were going to stop to have lunch in this very restaurant?
e) I bought this book because they told me I’d like/I was going to like it.
