Miss Micciche's

4th Grade

Dec. 12, 2017

Happy holidays from Room 13! We are having a blast learning each and every day. This is such a fun time of year, and I love seeing all the students work together to learn and grow! Here are some updates on what we have been up to lately:

MATH: Students have been working very hard on their long division. They have mastered many strategies and are starting to feel confident with it. We are now using up to 4-digit numbers in division! Next, we will revisit multiplication and use 2-digit numbers. Please continue to work with your student on their multiplication math facts. This will make long division and multiplication much easier for them! If you need any resources, please let me know!

READING: Students have been enjoying their RTI classes and have been participating in activities such as literature circles and guided reading. We are gearing up to read our next class novel when we get to westward expansion in Social Studies!

WRITING: We are onto informational writing in Room 13! We will be looking at how to write a topic sentence and how to organize a paragraph. Students will then write an informational writing piece and publish it!

SCIENCE: Students have started learning about circuits and electricity. They have loved exploring snap circuits and seeing what they can create! I was so happy to see a lot of perseverance from students even with this challenging task.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Currently, we are studying the explorers that discovered California and we their motivations to come to the new land. Next, we will move onto California Missions!

STEAM: Students participated in the Hour of Code last week and had so much fun exploring new and familiar coding websites. Their engagement and determination was awesome to see!

ART: We continue to have Art Vista and Clay projects in our classroom this month! We have learned about pointillism in Art Vista and we have worked on making mini mission tea lights and holiday decorations in Clay.

EXTRA FUN: We had TWO field trips to start our weeks back from Thanksgiving break. Students had a blast at the Tech Museum learning about the physics of roller coasters and seeing an IMAX movie on natural disasters. They also had a great time at the Walk Through California presentation. Students got a chance to role play different historical figures and created a large map of California together!

I can't believe another month has come and gone! Time really flies when you are having fun! Here is a quick update about what has been going on in Room 13

MATH: We finished our measurement unit and now are onto multiplication! Students are learning different strategies for multi-digit multiplication and working on explaining their thinking.

READING: Students are in full swing in their RTI classes. Most of the 4th graders read Stone Fox and have been analyzing characters, theme, and making predictions while they read.

WRITING: We have finished our personal narratives, and I'm so proud of the work these students have done! We are now onto creative narratives, which students have enjoyed brainstorming and writing rough drafts for.

SCIENCE: We are wrapping up our rock study this month by looking at minerals and discovering that minerals are all around us. We also did a fun, skeleton study where we looked at our hands and estimated the number of bones that were in there. Then, we got to do a great art project with this. We hope you stop by the room to see it!

SOCIAL STUDIES: Currently, we are learning about the early people in California. We've studied the different tribes that made up the state before the explorers came.

STEAM: This month, I focused on integrating STEAM into our different subject units. First, we did a design thinking challenge based on our first class novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. Students designed and built prototypes of items that could help the main character, Karana survive on her island. We also brought STEAM into our math unit! Students took apart VHS tapes and estimated how much tape was in them. It was fun to see so many of them engaged and seeing a VHS tape for the first time!

ART: We have had Art Vista and Clay projects in our classroom this month! The students love getting to do these fun art projects so thank you to our volunteers for all of your support!

EXTRA FUN: We had our Halloween party this past week and had so much fun playing Minute to Win It games! Thank you to our Room moms and all of the parent volunteers we had! The students had SO much fun and have not been able to stop talking about it.

Wow! What a busy month September has been! We are in full swing here in Room 13, so I wanted to give you a quick update on what we have been up to.

MATH: This month we started our first math unit on place value, rounding, and multi-step addition and subtraction word problems. We will be wrapping up our unit next week and moving onto measurement next!

READING: For reading this month, we read our first novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. Students talked about the different character traits of the main character, Karana, and used thinking maps to brainstorm their ideas. We also started RTI this past week and have been loving our new classes!

WRITING: We are working on building our ideas for our first personal narrative piece. We have been learning how to edit our work and how to add descriptive, sensory details to make the reader more engaged with our writing.

SCIENCE: The Room 13 scientists have been learning all about rocks, minerals, and volcanoes. We will continue to learn more about the rock cycle, and we will even be making our very own lava in class as we continue our studies on volcanoes!

SOCIAL STUDIES: Currently, we are learning about California and it's place in the world. Next week, we will be diving into each region and taking a closer look at what make California a special state!

STEAM: We have had a fun month full of STEAM exploration! We participated in our first BreakOut EDU and learned the importance of working in a team. Also, we have been exploring 3D modeling on Tinkercad and have been building models to show our Noddin Pride!

EXTRA FUN: We met our 1st grade buddies and have been getting to know each other better! Find a video of our buddies and us here: https://www.magisto.com/video/LANHagIUCjw8XkxnCzE?l=vsm&o=i&c=e
