Search for CP Violation in the Oscillations of D⁰ Mesons

The matter-antimatter asymmetry (CP violation) in D⁰ mesons has been recently measured by the LHCb experiment at the level of 10⁻³, meaning that for 1000000 D⁰ mesons produced there are 1000001 of its counterpart D̅⁰. While being so low, this asymmetry is still marginally compatible with the predictions from the Standard Model and further investigation is necessary. Particularly interesting searches of CP violation involve the study of its connection with the oscillations of D⁰ mesons into D̅⁰ (and viceversa). This purely quantum mechanical phenomenon may provide the necessary insights to clarify the nature of the asymmetry and highlight any Beyond the Standard Model contribution. In Bicocca, we focus on the study of multibody  decays (D⁰→ K⁰s π⁺π⁻, D⁰→ K⁰s K⁺K⁻). In particular, we are measuring CP violation in the oscillations of D⁰→ K⁰s K⁺K⁻ decays via the yCP observable.

Search for CP Violation by Triple Product Asymmetries

For producing CP violation, interference between two decay amplitudes is a minimum requirement. The typical observable to measure CP violation is the asymmetry between the D⁰ and D̅⁰ decays to a certain final state. The sensitivity to CP violation of this observable is final-state dependent and in some cases it could even vanish. Triple product correlations asymmetries provide an alternative observable to measure CP violation that has a sensitivity to CP violation that is complementary to the direct asymmetries. Furthermore, their definition allows to reduce significantly the systematic uncertainty with respect to the former, making them a powerful tool to search for CP violation in a high luminosity scenario.

Triple product correlation asymmetries were also used to evidence for the first time CP violation in Λ⁰b decays.

At Bicocca we study Triple Product Asymmetries to unveil CP violation in the decays of D⁰→K⁺K⁻π⁺π⁻ and D⁰→π⁺π⁻π⁺π⁻ decays.
