Bosco Nordio is located on the oldest dune system of the Venetian coast between Chioggia (VE) and the Po river that probably dates back at least 2 millennia ago. Bosco Nordio seems to have pre-Roman origins; it was first owned by the city of Chioggia, then given to the Nordio family in 1565, which, for the purpose of cultivating the land, completely destroyed the forest. At the end of the XVIII century, Andrea Nordio had a pine plant planted with a domestic pine, on the remains of the ancient holm oak, laurel and other Mediterranean species that represented "the ancient woodland habit". In 1959 it was sold to the former State Company for State Forests and the Integral Nature Reserve was established with Ministerial Decree 07/26/1971. Today it is managed by Veneto Agricoltura and is classified in Natura 2000 network as Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area. The total surface of the site is about 150 hectars, mainly covered by holm oak wood (habitat 9340) or common oak wood (habitat 91F0), with some clearings with the rare habitat of grey dunes (2130*). Some pond are also present in the Reserve.
The Reserve is managed by the Veneto Agricoltura agency, which applied a Management Plan, having the objectives of maintain or increase the biodiversity (as described in the Natura 2000 standard data form). Also, the plan encourage the development of economic/social activities sustainable with the Reserve biodiversity.
Exist some rules for the visitors (i.e. they have to remain on the paths, they couldn’t take animals or plants...) and some areas are forbidden to the visitors himself. Special measures (listed in the Management Plan) are applied to the less common habitats and species, which have priorities over other habitats or species. For example, to maintain the surfaces of grey dunes habitat, the expansion of the holm oak wood is controlled cutting the young plants growing inside the clearing. The results of these activities is checked by means of periodical monitoring, which are often the weakness of the system, because of the costs. In fact these activities often required professionalisms not founding inside the agency personnel.
The same management of the Reserve aimed at its preservation guarantees the delivery of eco-system services such as air quality, soil conservation, conservation and improvement of biodiversity and its dissemination also through the collection of vegetable seed.
Furthermore, particular attention is given to recreational educational activities for a school and general public in order to guarantee the delivery of eco-systemic services in the cultural and wellness field. For this reason, an organized service, on behalf of Veneto Agricoltura, by a qualified external supplier is active at the Reserve. Ensuring this leads to an increase in the anthropic impact on the Reserve that Veneto Agricoltura intends to improve through pilot action piloting.
Finally, among the most important systemic eco services is the research and study activity, which Veneto Agricoltura guarantees in collaboration with the University of Padua, also through the activation of internships and educational laboratories.
The Reserve is managed directly by Veneto Agricoltura, which has a qualified workforce (6 workers) always present at the Reserve, coordinated by a Rersponsable. The Reserve contains means and equipment necessary for its management. Since it is also a territory confined by a fence, this makes it particularly protected even from possible external interference.
The Reserve is public property (Veneto Region) and managed directly by Veneto Agricoltura - Veneto agency for innovation in the primary sector. Therefore the tasks and objectives are defined by guidelines decided at the regional level. The stakeholder directly involved is therefore the Administration of the Veneto Region. Also the Municipality of Chioggia, on whose territory the Reserve falls, is necessarily involved in some decision-making processes regarding the management of the Reserve as it holds in certain areas authorization power.
