ASCE Student Chapter

Fall 2023 End of Semester Message

To the members of the UNC Charlotte ASCE Student Chapter,

With final exams coming to an end and winter break coming to a head, now is a great opportunity for the ASCE Student Chapter Board to share an update about the chapter over the semester.

Leadership at every level within this chapter are proud beyond measure by the success and spirit displayed in the last several months since the school year began.  With that being said, there is much more work to be done, and there are more opportunities to improve and grow as an organization.  The board wishes to keep this enthusiastic good will in momentum for the spring semester, and will do our very best to serve this chapter as we look ahead to the Symposium in April, and the future beyond.

Enjoy your winter break, and we will see you all when classes begin again in January!

Sincerely,

ASCE Student Chapter Board

About Us

ASCE is the first and oldest national engineering society, founded in 1852. National membership exceeds 144,000, with over 15,000 being student members. National membership is free to students which allows access to all technical content ASCE offers. This is an amazing opportunity, considering ASCE is the world’s largest publisher of civil engineering technical content! As a student chapter, our goal is to facilitate interaction between students, faculty, and practicing engineers. Additionally, we sponsor intercollegiate competitions, community outreach, and society social events. The UNC Charlotte chapter hosts guest speakers from industry and government at meetings held throughout the semester. We strongly encourage all civil engineering students to participate in the many events that ASCE hosts!

The purpose of our chapter is to work together as engineering students for common goals. These goals are modeled after the National ASCE Chapter and include upholding a common view of making society a better place through the continual improvement of transportation, environmental, geotechnical and structural advancements as well as to represent the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Civil Engineering program at the Carolinas Symposium. The schools within the competition of the Carolinas Symposium include Clemson University, The University of South Carolina, The Military College of South Carolina –The Citadel, North Carolina State University, Duke University, North Carolina A&T, Horry Georgetown Technical college, and South Carolina State University. This competition consists of competing in civil engineering related activities, such as the concrete canoe and steel bridge, and other various completions with the chance to advance to Nationals and the opportunity to meet and network with other future civil engineers in the Carolinas.

2023 Innovation Contest National Champs

Our Innovation Team won the finals competition of the 2023 Innovation Contest that took place at the ASCE Annual Convention in Chicago, on October 20.  We are so incredibly proud of our fellow members and all their hard work to achieve this incredible accomplishment!
