Collaboration in Action: Engaged Scholarship and Student Impact Symposium

MISSION & VISION

The Collaboration in Action: Engaged Scholarship and Student Impact Symposium  unites the research and evaluation happening across the UNC Charlotte campus with community-engaged scholarship. The two-day Symposium is designed to bring the Charlotte community together by creatively intertwining research and evaluation alongside innovations in pedagogy, partnerships, and projects that inform student impact.

As defined in the UNC Charlotte Strategic Plan,  “community engagement occurs when academics and community partners work collaboratively with and through groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest or similar situations to address issues affecting the well‐being of partners." At an urban university, it includes experiential learning in a community environment as well as programs of research and scholarship (community-engaged research) that are distinguished by relying on the priorities and authority of both the researchers and community stakeholders to shape the design and execution of the research” and learning.

CHARLOTTE MODEL

The Collaboration in Action: Engaged Scholarship and Student Impact Symposium will promote space to creatively connect the Charlotte Model by highlighting components of student development and student success. The “Charlotte Model” is the term used in the UNC Charlotte strategic plan for the operationalization and communication of the University’s transformative, comprehensive, equitable and integrated educational experience.  With its focus on belonging, the Charlotte Model outlines an institutional pathway for students to explore their identity as a member of the Charlotte community, clarify their identity by deepening collaborative and constructive engagements with the Charlotte community, and establish their identity as an engaged Charlotte alumni by extending their connections beyond the campus community.

The Charlotte Model is an avenue for creatively intertwining a Niner identity with a greater Charlotte civic identity. The Symposium seeks to address the following questions:

ABOUT THE ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP AND STUDENT IMPACT SYMPOSIUM

Since 2015, UNC Charlotte has proudly hosted the biennial Collaboration in Action: Engaged Scholarship and Student Impact Symposium to bring Charlotte researchers and community stakeholders together to celebrate innovation in community-engaged teaching and learning. The success of this event has long forged connections and continues to yield collaborative partnerships among university professionals and community leaders. At its core, the Symposium has always preserved collaboration as a central value. Building on this foundation, urbanCORE has partnered with colleagues across campus to expand this event to a two-day symposium to highlight the broader impact of this work on both Charlotte students and the local community.

True to its mission, this interactive event will provide attendees with the opportunity to engage with UNC Charlotte faculty, staff, students, and community partners. Presentations and roundtable discussions will be guided by the following five tracks:
