Pattern Formation

(by W. González-Viñas)

My reseach in this topic ranges from the pattern formation in thermal convection and in liquid crystal valves (both mainly focused on the creation of topological defects when a pattern formation instability is crossed over) and in surface waves in fluids (corresponding to my Ph.D. work) to the structuration of a colloid (look at the materials science research). All the pattern formation considered is strongly related to the space-time chaos research. Of course, my research interests in this field are much wider than this.

Introduction

Pattern formation is the branch of Science that is devoted to the study of which structures emerge in a system if the control parameters are changed, as well as how and why they appear. The structures themselves are states of a system characterized by some specific symmetries. In structure formation, we focus on the symmetry changing (usually breaking) itself rather than on the details of the change of the state. A pattern is a structure, whose relevant times and lengths are human scale [M.I. Rabinovich et al. "The Dynamics of Patterns" (2000) World Scientific Publishing] [R. Hoyle "Pattern Formation: An Introduction to Methods" (2006) Cambridge Texts in Applied Mathematics Series. Cambridge University Press].
