The General Surgery Training Program includes both categorical and preliminary residents. The PGY-1 preliminary residency track attracts individuals who desire broad training in general surgery and are destined to become fully trained in other specialties that traditionally have residents enter as a PGY-2 in areas such as Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, and others.
Four preliminary residents are matched yearly in this track.
The Preliminary Track Program positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program. For more information on ERAS, select Electronic Residency Application Service. The Program hosts a single interview day in January each application year to candidates the Program selects for an interview.
All General Surgery Program policies provided within this Program Manual apply to the Preliminary Track Program, with the exception of Board certification and completion policies. Every effort is made to ensure that general surgery preliminary residents have an experience as similar to the categorical residents as possible.
