"5th Tuesday of the Month"
Per the ACGME common program requirements, residents must be given the opportunity to attend medical, mental health, and dental care appointments, including those scheduled during their working hours. The Program recognizes this requirement and advocates for this opportunity to all of its residents. The Residency also acknowledges that scheduling can be difficult for appointments that require future scheduling as work schedules can vary per service. Due to this, the Program has implemented a way to help with this often difficult situation.
Every month that contains five Tuesdays, the morning (7am-12pm) of the first Tuesday within that month will be granted "off" for purposes of providing residents the opportunity to focus on well being; i.e. appointments, family time, going to the bank, etc. This time would not take away from service demands as it is already designated "time away" to attend the Department of Surgery's Education Day; including M&M, Grand Rounds, and Core Curriculum.
The 2023-2024 Tuesdays of the Month are:
August 1
October 3
January 2
April 2
Physicians Wellness Collaborative
ACGME's Common Program Requirements outline the responsibility of the program, in partnership with the Sponsoring Institution, to address well-being by providing access to confidential, affordable mental health assessment, counseling, and treatment, including access to urgent and emergent care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In order to align with these requirements, the Program has requested that each resident connect with the University of Minnesota's Health Resource called Physicians Wellness Collaborative once during the year in order to understand its resources and processes if in case needed for a future use. This program provides counselors that help address family and personal concerns such as stress/burnout, relationship struggles, financial worries, and chemical use to name a few. Their brochure is linked HERE.
PGY-1: Research Resident Peer and Surgery Faculty Mentorship Program
At the start of each academic year, PGY-1 residents are paired with a post-PGY-3 research resident and surgery faculty member. This mentor/mentee program helps to provide peer support and acclimate the new PGY-1 residents into the program within the first year, as well as to create a professional connection that will be maintained throughout residency and beyond.
