You may contact your faculty supervisor or rotation site director to discuss complaints or grievances of any type. Alternatively, complaints or grievances may be discussed confidentially with the Program Director who maintains an "open door" policy and is available by cell-phone 24 hours/day. If the grievance or complaint is not resolved to your satisfaction, you may elevate the issue to the prior Vice-Chair of Education, Dr. Melissa Brunsvold, and subsequently to the Department Chair, Dr. Sayeed Ikramuddin. Concerns or grievances can be discussed in person with either individuals, or can be confidentially emailed to the Surgery Education Office through Qualtrics Survey HERE, which is checked weekly. If a grievance cannot be settled at the department level, the program leadership or trainee can appeal to the GME office as explained in “GME Policy: Discipline, Dismissal, Failure to Advance”. This protocol calls for notice before the action is taken, an opportunity for the resident to appear, and an appeals mechanism.
The Graduate Medical Education office provides an ombudsman for the residents and fellows if the issue is not settled within the Department of Surgery. The ombudsman for residents is Jan Morse (morse005@umn.edu).
Additional resources are available for campus-based problems and concerns: The Student Conflict Resolution Center offers informal and formal conflict resolution services.
