THE NATIONAL CHILDREN'S CANCER SOCIETY
Our Mission
The National Children's Cancer Society (NCCS) provides emotional, financial, and educational support to children with cancer, their families, and survivors.
How We Help
At the NCCS, we believe when a family is facing the tragedy of childhood cancer, all they should focus on is getting their child well again. Period. Families turn to us for help navigating the daunting world of childhood cancer to help them get where they need to be - physically, financially, and emotionally - to give them hope and to give their children the best possible shot at survival.
Financial Support
Transportation Assistance
Our Transportation Assistance Fund alleviates the financial burden of travel and lodging for families who have a child with cancer. This includes transportation expenses such as mileage, airfare, and lodging when a child needs to stay near the hospital for treatment and nonprofit lodging is unavailable.
Emergency Assistance
Our Emergency Assistance Fund provides $300 in emergency assistance per year to families with a child who’s been inpatient or relocated from home for 15 consecutive days in the past 90 days. This assistance can be used for mortgage, rent, utilities, childcare, car expenses, or treatment-related expenses such as meals away from home, prescriptions, and parking.
Emotional Support
Info and Support During Treatment
When the NCCS assists a family, they are provided a case manager who stands by the family’s side throughout their journey by providing practical and emotional support to parents and caregivers.
Community
The organization hosts a private Facebook group that provides a compassionate and supportive environment for childhood cancer survivors and their parents/guardians.
Mentorship
Our Mentoring Program pairs a younger child in treatment (ages 10-17) with one of our scholarship recipients. Mentors will offer their support and encouragement as their mentee faces the challenges of childhood cancer.
Info and Support After Treatment
The Beyond the Cure survivorship program prepares survivors and their families for life after cancer. Our Late Effects After Treatment Tool provides survivors with a private, customized online assessment of potential late effects based on their diagnosis and treatment.
Educational Support
College Scholarships
The Beyond the Cure Ambassador Scholarship Program remains a leader in both the dollar amount awarded and the number of recipients funded. 58 scholarships are awarded each academic year to help childhood cancer survivors achieve their academic and professional goals.
Publications
The NCCS has developed many helpful publications for parents and children with cancer throughout each of the treatment phases. Families may access our organization’s publications free of charge online.
Survivorship
The NCCS extends financial support to hospitals nationwide. Hospitals awarded our Beyond the Cure Survivorship grants allow them to host survivorship conferences tailored to their local communities - just like this one!
Global Outreach Support
In 1993, the NCCS Michele Hertlein Global Outreach Program was introduced to address the inadequate or non-existent medical care for children with cancer in developing countries. Children receiving treatment at our partnered facilities are never burdened with a hospital bill, and their families can focus on getting their children healthy again.
