About the Department of Urology
The University of Minnesota Department of Urology has been at the forefront of urologic patient care, research, and education for more than ninety years. Building on our past, we continue to lead innovative efforts in several areas of urology, including cancer, stones, infertility, and pediatric care. Our educational and training programs produce tomorrow’s best urologists, preparing them to deliver comprehensive and coordinated care. We have several strong and well-funded research programs in various areas of urology, including simulation, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, medical devices, and incontinence. Additionally, because we’re a part of the University of Minnesota Medical School, our physicians regularly collaborate with colleagues in areas like pediatrics and oncology to provide the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options.

Bladder cancer is the 7th-most common cancer in the U.S. and the 3rd-most common cancer in men with 65,000 new cases each year and over 500,000 living with the disease in the U.S. The University of Minnesota is at the forefront of research to identify early warning signs, discover better treatments, and work toward a potential cure. Some examples of our research progress in bladder cancer include identifying new urine-based diagnostics tests, treating early-stage cancer to preserve the bladder, and identifying precision medicine strategies to use chemotherapy more effectively.
