The Program believes in the wellness of its trainees and makes every effort to help satisfy this priority. Fellows are allowed 3-weeks of paid time off. This includes attending conferences, sick time, and vacation days. To request time off contact the Program Coordinator by email to discuss dates and impact on overall schedule.
Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST)
Earned sick and safe time (ESST) is paid leave employers must provide to employees working in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department Labor and Industry identified specific situations when the time can be used including when an employee is sick, to care for a sick family member, to seek assistance if an employee or their family member has experienced domestic abuse, or if there is a work or school closure that prevents an employee from being able to work. This program is offered in addition to the University’s traditional sick time program. Current sick time programs will not be impacted by ESST.
Employees who work at least 80 hours per year in Minnesota are eligible to accrue ESST. Eligible employees accrue ESST with their first hour worked in the state at the rate of two minutes for every one hour they worked. This equals one hour of ESST for every 30 hours worked with a maximum of 48 hours earned annually. Unused ESST will roll over to the next year. The maximum balance available at any one time is 80 hours, and if that limit is reached, accruals will stop until the balance falls below 80 hours. Accrual can be found in MyU, under “My Time”.
Residents and Fellows can use ESST in half-day increments.
Should the accrued ESST time surpass the board-approved limit for your specific specialty, utilizing such excess time might necessitate an extension of your training period to fulfill the stipulated requirements.
See Frequently Asked Questions on ESST here.

UMN Graduate Medical Education Policy
Residents and fellows (trainees) are eligible for the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Trainees must check with their department/program to determine if they qualify. Leave shall not exceed 12 weeks in any 12-month period. The 12-month period is based on an academic year (07/01-06/30). The trainee may qualify for Short Term and Long Term Disability benefits.

The Program is in full support of trainees who need to take additional time off under FMLA. We will work with the fellow and UMN GME to extend training as needed and to apply for disability coverage for possible salary support during FMLA time away.
Program Responsibility
Programs are responsible for tracking time off for all leaves to ensure that requirements are met prior to graduation from the program.
Please Note
Trainees deciding to take additional time that would extend their training in the Program requires advanced approval from the Program Director.
