Dr. Dudley is a Professor of Medicine and is nationally recognized as an expert in health services research. His research focuses on improving the quality and value of care while reducing harm and waste this includes: 1) developing and validating novel measures of quality and safety, 2) studying the clinical and policy determinants of clinical performance, and 3) implementing programs to measure quality and report providers’ performance to the providers themselves, the public, and other policymakers. Dr. Dudley’s research team address these topics with a variety of techniques, including using large databases to measure performance, develop new measures, or assess how policies are associated with level of performance. Dr. Dudley's current work involves randomized controlled trials and observational studies of incentive programs and projects to understand the sources of performance variation among providers, especially as relates to disparities in care.

The research components of Dr. Dudley’s work, including those of his mentees, have been published in many major journals. For example, ten different mentees have had first author articles in JAMA or NEJM. This has led both to awards for Dr. Dudley (one of the few health services researchers elected to ASCI; the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Investigator Award in Health Policy in 2005) and to numerous awards to his mentees from many different groups (e.g., Young Investigator Award or equivalent from AcademyHealth (the society for health services researchers), the American Heart Association, the Lupus Foundation. In addition, last year, one of my mentees (Naomi Bardach) received the top award in pediatrics health services research, the Nemours Child Health Services Research Award, from AcademyHealth.

Current Trainees: Nick Ingraham (4th year research fellow).
