Grand Rounds

Most Fridays, the Department of Neurology offers learning opportunities for neurology professionals throughout the community - both inside and outside the University from 12-1pm. Neurology Grand Rounds is designed to improve the broad practice of neurology, including patient care, healthcare research, medical education, public health, and innovation. Grand Rounds sessions are open to the public.  CME credits are available to those who attend in-person.

Meeting/Conference Attendance

Unless on vacation, attendance at Friday School didactics is required. This time is protected while on rotation, and pagers are not expected to be carried/answered. Site-specific coverage is outlined below

UMMC : Attending on service will cover general service pager after a brief handoff with a patient list. New/urgent consults will not be completed during didactic time; residents returning to service must complete them in a timely fashion. The Vascular Fellow will cover stroke codes, cross-cover ICU patients, and stroke patients. Residents will provide a formal sign-out with a current patient list when passing the stroke pager.

HCMC : The attending on service will cover the neurology pass pager. New and urgent consults will not be held. A brief hand-off is required with a current patient list.

VA : Residents leave their personal pagers with the attending and must return to the site to pick them up. New and urgent consults will not be held, and residents must complete them upon their return.

Regions : The call schedule at regions will not include residents during Friday School

Residents rotating from other specialties/programs must be given the opportunity to attend Friday School and are not considered substitute coverage for neurology residents. Their attendance is not mandatory at Friday school, and they may choose to stay with the attending for individualized learning time.

Residents on inpatient services are expected to return to their sites in a timely fashion to reclaim the service or personal pagers, receive an handoff about events or new patients and ensure all clinical information is updated and ready for hand-off to the on call residents.

Resident-Led Conferences

Residents are the leading teachers in several Friday School case sessions: Moriarity Rounds, Bundlie Rounds and M&M.  This is an opportunity to flex your teaching skills and present and analyze cases in interactive sessions designed to help teach localization, clinical decision making and critical thinking and systems-based practices.  With chief resident and faculty support, these sessions allow you to take a deep dive into a case and share it with your colleagues at Friday School.
