UMN Medical Education
Reform Student Coalition

Who We are

The UMN MedEd Reform Student Coalition (MERSC) is a student organization at the University of Minnesota Medical School created in June 2020 in response to the high-profile murders of Black people across the country by U.S. law enforcement, including the murder of George Floyd in our hometown by the Minneapolis Police Department. Our organization was inspired by colleagues at UCSD ARC, in addition to the countless student and faculty predecessors at our institution who have been committed to this work for longer than we have existed.

We are comprised of medical students advocating for structural reform to address the

  1. current lack of pre-clinical curricular content on health inequities, trauma-informed care, and the history of racism in medicine and healthcare

  2. weak ties between the Medical School and the local Twin Cities community

  3. underrepresentation of students and faculty of color

We aim to make the University of Minnesota Medical School an actively anti-racist institution.

The organization hopes to partner with faculty, staff, administrators, and local grassroots organizations to push for these changes, ensuring that every UMN Medical School graduate and future MN physician is equipped with the knowledge and understanding to best provide and advocate for their future patients.
