PRESENTING AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - ICSD [2ND YEAR STUDENTS]

The annual International Conference on Sustainable Development Practice (ICSD) is the joint meeting of the Global MDP Network and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) of the United Nations Environment Program. Most years the Minnesota MDP program, ICGC and the Humphrey School are able to offer limited financial support to students presenting their work at this meeting. The intent and priority of this support is to enable student's to present on the summer field placement projects.

To be eligible for partial support, students must individually submit the following items by August 30:

  • Conference paper/poster abstract and documentation of acceptance;
  • An approximate budget detailing anticipated expenses. At minimum, the budget must include flight, hotel or lodging, and expected per diem. Why? Because it is not possible to fully support students in this endeavor, it is important that applicants demonstrate their understanding of the full cost of this experience.
  • Submit all materials as a single (merged) PDF file to Laura Bell at ICGC and copy the MDP Program Director.

NOTE: The level of funding for this support is limited. The intent is to ensure that at least two students from each team are able to present at the meeting. Therefore, each team is eligible for up to $900 and each individual student is eligible for an award of up to $450. If a team elected to send more than two students then the funds will distributed evenly among those attending. Funds will be provided in the form of reimbursement for travel costs after the conference (e.g., hotel, per diem) or before if expenses qualify for pre-reimbursement (e.g., airfare). To be reimbursed, students need to complete a travel reimbursement request and provide receipts for up to $450 in acceptable travel expenses (airfare, local transportation to/from airport, lodging all need receipts; per diem for meals does not).

PRESENTING AT PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCES [2ND YEAR STUDENTS]

Students in their second year of the the Masters of Development Practice degree program are eligible to apply for limited1 financial support to attend professional conferences or meetings(2) at which the student will play an “active role”. This entails the presentation of a peer-reviewed paper or poster, or a role as a panel chair, invited speaker, or discussant (panelist).

Total funding per student is limited to $400. Up to 4 grants will be made each academic year. No more than two awards will be made for fall conferences to allow opportunity for students participating in conferences falling in the spring semester. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis (as needed) rather than on or before a specified date. In the event of multiple applications, the MDP program committee will determine recipients based on the following criteria: relevance to development practice, quality of opportunity, academic standing of the student and program/school engagement. Interested students should submit the following information.

  • Conference details and documentation of invitation or acceptance
  • A summary of student’s role at the event (presenter, moderator, panelist, etc).
  • Related materials (e.g., an abstract, paper, etc.)
  • Curriculum vitae or résumé
  • An approximate budget detailing anticipated expenses. At minimum, the budget must include flight, hotel or lodging, and expected per diem. Why? Because it is not possible to fully support students in this endeavor, it is important that applicants demonstrate their understanding of the full cost of the experience before requesting funds.
  • Submit all materials as a single (merged) PDF file to Laura Bell at ICGC and copy the MDP Program Director.

1. The total annual budget for this program will be $1600 per academic year, with individual students entering or in their second year eligible to apply for a single, $400 grant, provided they meet the requirement specified above. Two travel grants will be awarded each semester, for a total of four each academic year (September - August). There is no guarantee of funding: once the budget is depleted no additional awards will be made. 2. This opportunity does not include the International Conference for Sustainable Development (ICSD) in New York.
