NAMI, the country's largest grassroots mental health organization, is committed to enhancing the well-being of individuals and families impacted by mental illness. Through NAMIWalks, the organization aims to raise awareness about mental health, generate funds for NAMI's outstanding free programs, and foster a sense of community by assuring people they are not alone in their journey.


We invite you to join the MCHSIG team at the NAMI Walks Minnesota event as we come together to raise awareness and support mental health.

Global Maternal and Child Health (MCH): Spotlight on Students’ Work in the Dominican Republic, Uganda and the Philippines


What are students doing to help shape global health? Join us after the Health Disparities Round Table for lunch and a discussion with five MCH students to find out! Facilitated by MCH Program Chair Dr. Zobeida Bonilla, the student speakers will discuss the:

Estefanía Henríquez Luthje, M.D. (she/her) (MPH 2024)

Estefanía is a second-year MCH MPH student minoring in Epidemiology and Global Health and a Fulbright Scholar from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Her background is in programs and research related to nutrition and the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality through rural nurse education. She earned her medical degree from Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo in 2020. Estefanía recently completed her Applied Practice Experience (ApEx) with Batey Relief Alliance in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic, where she applied her MCH competencies to describe the nutritional situation of children under ten and women aged 18-49 living in bateyes—rural, vulnerable communities near sugarcane fields. Cassie Mohawk (she/her) (MPH 2024)

Cassie is a second-year Maternal and Child Health MPH student with a minor in Sexual Health. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota Duluth in Public Health, an accredited program by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), with minors in Early Childhood Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She has interests in breastfeeding, sexual health, women’s health, and health communication. Cassie, with Kailee and Estefanía, completed her Applied Practice Experience (ApEx) with Batey Relief Alliance in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic, where she applied her MCH competencies to describe the nutritional situation of children under ten and women aged 18-49 living in bateyes—rural, vulnerable communities near sugarcane fields. Mary Kate Leloux (she/her) (MPH 2024)

Mary Kate is a second-year Maternal and Child Health student with minors in Health Equity and Epidemiology. Mary Kate’s background is primarily in rural and global health focused on the social determinants of health. Her undergraduate degree in biology and sociology led her to an opportunity to study abroad in Uganda–an experience that changed the course of her career from a clinical focus to pursuing a degree in public health. Mary Kate recently completed her Applied Practice Experience with The Mango Project, a locally-owned nutrition education and distribution center in Northern Uganda. Mary Kate applied her coursework and MCH competencies to re-stabilize the organization within the local community after the longest pandemic lockdown of any country in the world. Kailee Elizabeth Schaberg (she/they) (MPH 2024)

Kailee is a second-year Maternal and Child Health MPH student with minors in Health Equity, Sexual Health, & Epidemiology. She graduated with her B.S. in Public Health from Northern Arizona University. Kailee completed her global fieldwork experience alongside Estefanía and Cassie with Batey Relief Alliance in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic, where she applied her MCH competencies to describe the nutritional situation of children under ten and women aged 18-49 living in bateyes—rural, vulnerable communities near sugarcane fields. Kailee’s public health aspiration is to collaboratively dismantle policies and practices that restrict bodily autonomy, safety, and integrity. Connect with her via LinkedIn.

Sophia Weelborg (she/her) (MPH 2024)

Sophia is a second-year Maternal and Child Health MPH student with interests in global health and the perinatal period. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities with a major in Biology, Society, & Environment, and minors in Public Health, Sociology, Population Studies, and Psychology. Sophia completed her Applied Practice Experience on the island of Tingloy in the Philippines through the Child Family Health International Program, where she observed healthcare provision in a very rural setting. Additionally, she applied MCH competencies to complete a case study of teenage pregnancy in Tingloy due to high prevalence in this area. Connect with Sophia at weelb004@umn.edu or via LinkedIn.

Beyond Walls


The Division of Epidemiology & Community Health and the Maternal and Child Health Student Interest Group (MCHIG) would like to invite you all to our first event of the semester “Beyond Walls”, an organizing initiative featuring documentary films that define and amplify what prison industrial complex abolition means. Before the screening, we will have a presentation about mass incarceration and public health, created and presented by current SPH students. 


The event is free and open to the public so feel free to share with your friends!

Giving Voices to Mothers: HEWG Journal Club Meeting

The Health Equity Work Group (HEWG) Journal Club is an interactive forum for faculty, staff, students, and advanced trainees interested in current health equity research. The group meets regularly to discuss and critically evaluate, appraise, and become familiar with best current practices and applications as they relate to health equity, including best practices in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR). The first meeting of the academic year will focus on the 2018 study, Giving Voices to Mothers, with guest host Monique Katsuki, MCH Student!

This exciting event will be held on February 23rd, 2023 at the McNamara Alumni Center and on Zoom. Connect with fellow MCHers and engage in thought-provoking discussions on "navigating and innovating solutions for women's health services, policies, and access issues".
