New research studies at the University of Minnesota for teens with obesity.

Impact of Childhood Obesity

Our bodies are hard-wired to carry extra weight. It is not your fault. It is not your child’s fault. At the University of Minnesota's Center for Pediatric Obesity Medicine (CPOM), we do research to help discover new solutions and treatments to help your child live a healthier life.

Carrying extra weight in childhood greatly increases the chance of carrying extra weight as an adult. In other words, your child will not  “grow out of it.” The younger they are at the time of intervention, the greater the chance to alter the course of the disease; to decrease their risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, some types of cancer and mental health problems.

About CPOM at the University of Minnesota

The approach we take in our research center is that obesity is primarily a biologically driven disease. It is not a character flaw. It is not a wrong choice on your part, or your child’s. Most people will not lose weight simply by trying harder to exercise more and eat less. The solutions for better, more effective treatments need to come from what we discover from the realm of research.
