Minors

Are you interested in completing a minor with your ECE major? See below for some common minor options that work well with ECE degrees

Other U of M Minors may be useful or of interest to complete alongside an ECE degree although may not give ECE degree credit

  • Computer Science Minor - EE students can declare a CSCI Minor and may "double dip" many of the CSCI requirements using the "additional technical elective" credits in the EE technical program. EE students should discuss their plan with the ECE undergraduate advisor to maximize course efficiency. CompE students are not eligible to declare a CSCI Minor.

  • Mathematics Minor - Common option for ECE students (relates well to Digital Signal Processing areas).

  • Physics Minor - Common option for ECE students (relates well to Magnetic, Optics and RF areas).

  • Astrophysics Minor - EE students who took Physics III (instead of Chem II) can complete the Astrophysics Minor by taking AST 2001. AST 2001 may apply to the "additional technical electives" area of the EE student's technical program depending on the number of previous number of "additional technical elective" credits. CompE students are eligible as well although they will need to take additional coursework over and above CompE requirements.

  • Management Minor - Students considering a Management Minor should discuss with ECE undergraduate advisor. Students who matriculated at the U of M in Fall 2020 or later can opt for an EE or CompE degree with a Business and Management Emphasis. Students who began at the U of M prior to Fall 2020 must complete the Management Minor for credits to apply to BEE or BCompE degrees.

  • Product Design Minor - Students considering a Product Design minor should discuss with ECE undergraduate advisor. Students who matriculated at the U of M in Fall 2020 or later can opt for an EE or CompE degree with a Product Design Emphasis. Students who began at the U of M prior to Fall 2020 must complete the Product Design Minor for credits to apply to BEE or BCompE degrees.

  • Interdisciplinary Design Minor - Students considering an Interdisciplinary Design minor should discuss with ECE undergraduate advisor. Students who matriculated at the U of M in Fall 2020 or later can opt for an EE or CompE degree with an Interdisciplinary Design Emphasis. Students who began at the U of M prior to Fall 2020 must complete the Interdisciplinary Design Minor for credits to apply to BEE or BCompE degrees.

  • Other Minors can be completed alongside ECE degrees although minimal "double dipping" or overlap of technical credits are likely. Some additional Minor credits may be approved for ECE technical credit on request.

  • Other possible Minors which may be of interest to ECE students include:

Accounting, Biochemistry, Biology, Business Law, Chemistry, Information Technology, Languages, Leadership, Neuroscience, Statistics, Sustainability
