Introduction
Completed applications are reviewed by a CIS reviewer and faculty member. Qualified applicants will be invited to interview with a U of M faculty member and a CIS reviewer. Instructors are selected by faculty from the University department offering the course in accordance with University policies. Once approved, an instructor is appointed as a Teaching Specialist 9754 in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. Approved instructors teach the University course at their high school.
CIS Instructor Position: 9754 Teaching Specialist
CIS instructors meet criteria specified by the U of M department offering the course.
Required Qualifications
Competence to teach the course material, demonstrated through degrees, coursework, assessments, and experience specified by the University department offering the course
At least three years of teaching experience. Some disciplines require more, and/or specific types of teaching experience
Demonstrated commitment to staying current in the field
Key Responsibilities
Teach the University course
Teach the U of M course; understand and apply University and department expectations regarding content, assessment, pedagogy, grading, and policy
Develop an online course management site (Canvas), if required by the department
Provide students in the course with a detailed, approved syllabus
Develop independent learners who meet University student outcomes for the course
Advise students with regard to academic concerns, and, if necessary, assist with withdrawal from the course
Facilitate University course logistics
Confirm that students meet student eligibility criteria, and assist students with registration
Manage online end-of-course grading
Administer University Student Rating of Teaching (SRT) evaluation each term the course is taught
Prepare students to participate in CIS surveys
Contribute to the U of M academic community and continue professional growth
Participate in required U of M faculty-led, discipline-specific professional development workshops for as long as you teach the U of M course
Participation may include: instructor presentation; readings; peer observation; textbook review; and exam, material, and topic development
Share resources and teaching materials, and maintain professional collegiate relationships with faculty coordinators and other CIS instructors
Keep current with the field to enhance knowledge and expertise
